At its core,
Sandhurst is an inter-company competition for USMA. However, West Point teams now compete, not only amongst themselves, but against teams from their fellow United States
Service Academies, 4 select University ROTC teams, the United States Military Academy Preparatory School team, and international teams from Britain's Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS), Canada's Royal Military College (RMC)
and as of last year Afghanistan's National Military Academy. Each USMA Cadet Company and Visiting
Team selects a 9-member Squad (at least one member must be female) with two alternates. This squad is required to perform a series of challenging military tasks during a rapid, non-tactical move along a partly-prescribed
7 mile route, in less than 4 hours. Squad's scores are determined by combining the points they earn by performing each military task along the route, with the points earned for completing the course within the
4-hour timeframe; the faster a squad completes the tasks and course to standard, the higher the possible score. The victorious squads are recognized and rewarded at an awards ceremony that concludes the event.
