Mr. Freeman has been an Instructor in the Department of Physical Education since October 2010. While at West Point, he has taught Boxing, Combat Applications, Volleyball, Basketball, and Foundations of Personal Fitness, and has completed Levels 1 and 2 of the U.S. Army Combatives Certification Course. He also serves in the DPE Competitive Sports Office, with joint oversight of Company Athletics.
Prior to West Point, Mr. Freeman was an associate in the Department of Athletics Business Office at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and coaching men’s basketball at Chapel Hill High School.
After studying Athletic Training at Brigham Young University (B.S. ’99, M.S. ’03), Mr. Freeman was the Head Athletic Trainer at Mountain View High School (Orem, UT) and Austin College (Sherman, TX). His athletic training experience also included work with the National Football League’s Oakland Raiders and Carolina Panthers, and he was a host athletic trainer for Men’s Ice Hockey at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, UT.
Shifting his career focus to education and administration, Mr. Freeman served as a teacher, Athletic Director, and Operations Director at Copper Canyon Academy, a therapeutic boarding school that was highlighted on The Dr. Phil Show. During this time, he also coached men’s basketball at Camp Verde High School.
While at CCA, he designed and implemented an exercise program which measurably improved the cardiovascular fitness of the student population.
Mr. Freeman earned a Second Degree Black Belt in Kwon Shu Karate, studying under Master Bobby Lawrence. He taught karate at Bobby Lawrence Karate Training Centers in Orem, American Fork, and Spanish Fork, UT, and was Head of School at Master Lawrence’s Springville and St. George, UT schools. He has also taught karate and self-defense at BYU and UNC-Chapel Hill.
