Test Methodology and Standards

CADET MUST BE ABLE TO ACHIEVE A POSITION OF SAFETY AT THE COMPLETION OF ANY TESTED 4TH CLASS SKILL COMPONENT, OR THE SCORE IS INVALID AND MUST BE TESTED AGAIN. ALL SKILL EVENTS MUST BE ATTEMPTED FOR SCORE.

Survival Gate # 1

1.  UNIFORM:            Swimsuit, Goggles

2. PROTOCOL:          Cadet enters the water from a controlled seated entry position, pushes away from the wall to a stationary position in the center of lane 1 or 6, and demonstrates 5 consecutive rhythmic bobs; touching the pool bottom on each iteration. Cadet then transitions to a 3 minute treading position, maintaining a consistent front surface support posture (ears above surface), transitioning once again into 3 minute drownproofing position and finishing with one vertical exhalation in re-establishing a POS.

3. STANDARDS:

                                    a. 5 Ryth Bobs = 5 pts

                                    b. 5 Ryth Bobs + 3 m Tr = 10 pts

                                    c. 5 Ryth Bobs + 3 m Tr + 3 m Dproofing = 15 pts

                                    d. 5 Ryth Bobs + 3 m Tr + 3 m Dproofing + 1 Vrt.Exh. = 20 pts

BIOMECHANICAL STROKE APPLICATION

Elementary Backstroke, Front Crawl, Breastroke and Sidestroke

1. UNIFORM: Swimsuit, Goggles

2. PROTOCOL:  Cadet starts in the water and swims 100 yards utilizing the best technique he/she can for the designated stroke.  Pushing off wall/bulkhead after each length of the pool is authorized. Evaluation** is subjective by nature and aligned with three fundamental key performance segments per stroke: Upper Torso (Arms), Lower Torso (Legs), and Stroke Fluidity (Balance/Coordination). Scoring breakouts as follows:

 Segment                                               Score

Upper Torso (Arms)                             3pts

Lower Torso (Legs)                             3pts

Stroke Fluidity (Bal/Coord.)                 3pts

Survival Gate # 2

1.      UNIFORM:  Swimsuit, ACUs, Boots, LCE, Weapon

2.      PROTOCOL:  Cadet enters the water off 1M platform (starting block), utilizing a proper stride entry from a high port arms position with weapon. Cadet successfully cross-slings the weapon on entry, and continues with a controlled surface stroke application 12.5 yds before transitioning into a bob & travel posture for an additional 12.5 yds. Without making contact with pool’s edge, Cadet then removes both LCE and weapon (surface or bottom option), re-cross slings the weapon*, and re-establishes surface inertia back toward the original starting point, utilizing any combination of three survival stroke applications. The weapon is again ditched (surface) before successfully navigating (passing beneath) an underwater obstacle enroute to a final position of safety.

*  One rhythmic bob is permitted in between the initial equipment ditch and re-cross sling of the weapon before initiating return surface swim. NOTE: Cadet must achieve a 10 yd surface swim (ditch position to platform) w/weapon cross slung to successfully attain a 5 point surface swim gradient.

3.      STANDARDS:

      a. 12.5 yd wet cy = 1 pt

      b. 12.5 yd wet cy + 12.5 bob/trav = 4 pts (3)

      c. 12.5 yd wet cy + 12.5 bob/trav + ditch  = 9 pts (5)

     d. 12.5 yd wet cy + 12.5 bob/trav + ditch + surf swim/weapon (to platform) = 16 pts (7)

     e. 12.5 yd wet cy + 12.5 bob/trav + ditch + surf swim/weapon + underwater obstacle = 25 pts (9)

5 Minute ACU Swim

1.      UNIFORM:  Swimsuit, ACUs, Boots

2.       PROTOCOL:  Cadet enters the water (rolling wave conditions) and swims the length of the pool.  Any of the four strokes learned in class are authorized for usage. The cadet cannot touch the wall or the side of the pool – he/she must successfully execute a turn at each end of the pool without touching and/or pushing off the wall or pool bottom.  An initial push off the wall to start the test is authorized. The test will be terminated if a cadet touches the wall or pool bottom.  Cadet must swim for a full 5 minutes and complete a minimum distance of 75 yards to be grade eligible.

2.      PROTOCOL: Following the commands of the Instructor, the cadet will execute a high level (6.5 meter) entry into the pool, transition into an underwater swimming posture, and attempt to swim for distance (25 yards max.) underwater navigating a series of submerged hoops. Upon surfacing, cadet will establish surface inertia utilizing any combination of survival stroke, completing a full 50 yards from point of water break…not touching the wall or lane lines throughout. Once back at original break point, cadet must inflate ACU blouse achieving surface buoyancy with no supporting kick and/or arm movement.

2. PROTOCOL:  Cadet will progress through the 3 event Combat Water Survival Test (CWST), as outlined in the following segments:

Event # 1

Task: Swim 20 yards

Condition: While wearing unbloused ACU uniform, boots complete LCE (suspenders, pistol belt, Ammo pouches, with 2 empty canteens), and carrying a rubber M16 rifle.

Standard: Cadets will enter the water performing a controlled seated entry and complete a surface swim (attain a position of safety) unassisted without loss of equipment, without touching the bottom or sides of the pool, and without showing unusual signs of fear or panic.

Event # 2

Task: Walk off a 3-meter platform into the water.

Condition: While wearing unbloused ACU uniform, boots, complete LCE (suspenders, pistol belt, 2 ammo pouches, with empty canteens), and carrying a rubber M16 rifle.

Standard: Cadet will walk blindfolded off a 3 meter platform with the weapon at a port arms position. Upon entering the water, student will remove the blindfold and swim to poolside unassisted, without loss of equipment and without showing unusual signs of fear or panic.

Event # 3

Task: LCE & Weapon Removal

Condition: While wearing unbloused ACU uniform, boots, complete LCE (suspenders, pistol belt, 2 ammo pouches, with empty canteens), and carrying M16 rifle.

Standard: Cadet will perform a rear entry from the poolside into the water, resurface, completely submerge, discard weapon and LCE while submerged (bottom ditch), resurface and swim to the poolside without becoming entangled in his/her equipment, and without showing unusual signs of fear or panic.

3.  STANDARDS:

            Non-Graded Event/Potential BOLIC Exposure Event

COGNITIVE WRITTEN EXAMINATION

1.   UNIFORM:  N/A

2.   PROTOCOL:  Upon completion of lesson # 18, Cadets will be given access to an online cognitive written multiple choice instrument via the CIS Portal. Constructed comprehensively from applicable course materials within the 4th Class Swimming Curriculum, each Cadet will complete 10 randomly selected multiple choice questions accordingly. Upon electronic submission, a grade quotient (possible 20 points) will be automatically uploaded to their respective section record and returned to the Cadet themselves, in facilitating both test grade notice and review.

3.   STANDARDS: Possible 20 points (10 question test/2 points each) is available with no set pass/fail quotient.
