COURSE SCOPE The Fourth Class Aquatics Program is a 19 lesson course designed to develop basic survival swimming proficiency and challenge the aquatic ability of all classifications of swimmers. The Programs of Instruction (POI) for Non-Swimmers, Beginners, High and Low Intermediates, and Advanced Swimmers; are divided into two progressive curriculum tracks: basic stroke development and combat survival swimming. Emphasis in all levels is focused on elements of basic locomotion, general watermanship, and cumulative survival skill units; to include breath control, buoyancy positions, stroke assessment, and both general and specific swimming endurance. COURSE OBJECTIVES By the end of the course, a cadet will be able to: Demonstrate physical and mental adjustments to the water environment to include breath control above and below the surface of the water, and appropriate body positioning in relation to buoyancy, basic locomotion, and relaxation at surface level. Demonstrate an efficient and effective Elementary Backstroke, Front Crawl, Breastroke, and Sidestroke; utilizing correct biomechanics, balance, and synchronization. Demonstrate an increase in cardio-respiratory and muscular endurance. Demonstrate a basic level of proficiency in a wide variety of military survival swimming applications. Demonstrate enhanced skill achievement and self-confidence, by successfully confronting and overcoming fear, through successful completion of challenging curricular skill requirements.
