Equipment

Tennis racquets come in a variety of sizes, materials, and prices.  It is not necessary for a beginner to have an expensive racquet.  Instead, it is important to start with a racquet that is light enough to control without elbow or wrist discomfort, and one that has a grip diameter that is appropriate for the player’s hand size.  A common method for determining grip size is to measure from the tip of the middle finger straight down to the first palmar crease closest to the knuckles.  This measurement, in inches, will correspond to the appropriate grip size.

Some racquets are sold pre-strung and others will need to be strung by a professional.  A professional stringer can offer advice on the appropriate type of strings and the desired tension depending on the racquet, skill level, and playing style.  In general, more string tension will offer less power but more control and less string tension will offer more power but less control.

Tennis balls can be purchased inexpensively and should be replaced often.  Over time they lose pressure and become “dead” which alters their play.

Footwear is an important piece of equipment for a tennis player.  The three most important considerations when selecting footwear are safety, comfort, and function.  Footwear that is not designed for lateral movement, such as running sneakers, can increase a player’s risk of ankle and knee injuries.  Choose a shoe that is designed for court use and lateral movement and one that fits well and is comfortable.  In addition, some tennis facilities may have requirements for the sole of the shoe.  Many sneakers have dark, marking soles that leave residue on court surfaces.  When the ball hits these marks it bounces or skips off the surface differently than it does on other areas of the court.  Look for a shoe that is labeled “non-marking sole.”

The most important consideration when choosing clothing is function.  It must allow adequate range of motion for efficient stroke mechanics.  Consider the climate as lighter colored clothing reflects the sun’s rays and is much cooler.  Some facilities have a dress code requiring collars or prohibiting cut-offs.  In general, follow the appropriate etiquette and then choose something comfortable and functional.

Other accessories may help to make the game more enjoyable.  Hats and sunglasses can help protect the eyes from the sun and enhance vision.  Sunscreen should always be used when playing outdoors, especially in the middle of the day.  Sweatbands may help to keep your hands and face free from perspiration.
