Protocol Office

protocol-header.jpg

The role of this office is to provide support and guidance for every aspect of both protocol and etiquette for the United States Military Academy, its Superintendent, and for all subordinate directorates.

“Protocol is the combination of good manners and common sense, which allows effective communications between heads of state and their representatives.” - Department of the Army Pamphlet 600–60

Closely related to protocol is etiquette; the encompassing body of manners and forms prescribed by custom, usage, or authority. As the accepted as correct behavior for when individuals interact with one another, etiquette preserves a mutual respect for the rights and dignities of others.

Each year, USMA hosts hundreds of high-level government officials, visiting dignitaries, heads of state, and military leadership. Therefore, to ensure the protocol and etiquette required for a broad spectrum of guests and the events they attend here, it is essential that the staff for the Protocol Office maintain the highest-level of attention to detail.

West Point offers Army Lodging and particularly a Distinguished Visitors Quarters (DVQ). The Protocol Office manages the DVQ for guest of the Superintendent, but for general information on booking the quarters for unofficial guests, please contact the USMA Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) office.
