MAJ John D. Cunningham was born in 1979 to John and Cindy Cunningham of Pearland, Texas and has four other siblings.

He received his commission as an Engineer Officer from the United States Military Academy June 1st, 2002 and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, KY. He served as a Platoon Leader in B Company, 326th EN BN as a Sapper Platoon Leader in Mosul, Iraq in 2003, and as an Earthmoving Platoon Leader in HHC, 326th EN BN in 2004 at Fort Campbell, KY. He served as the Executive Officer for A Company, 326th EN BN through its transformation to 1st Special Troops Battalion from 2004 to 2005. He has served as Battalion S-4 for the 1st Special Troops Battalion from 2005 to 2007. For 1st BCT’s deployment in OIF IV, he was assigned to the Military Transition Team, 1-32nd Cavalry Squadron, training an Iraqi Army battalion in Northeastern Diyalah Province, Iraq from September 2005 to September 2006. MAJ Cunningham Commanded A Company, 1st STB from 6 April 2007 until 14 June 2008 during 1BCT’s OIF VI deployment, serving in Tikrit, Iraq. He then commanded Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st STB from 16 July 2008 until 1 June 2009 in Tikrit, Iraq and at Fort Campbell, KY. MAJ Cunningham is currently serving as an Instructor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at the United States Military Academy.

MAJ Cunningham’s military education includes the Engineer Officer’s Basic Course, Engineer Captains Career Course, Intermediate Level Education at Fort Lee, VA, the US Army Airborne School, Ranger school, the Sabalauski Air Assault School, and US Army Combatives Course at Fort Benning, GA.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, the Combat Action Badge, the Air Assault Badge, the Army Parachutist Badge, and the Ranger Tab.

MAJ Cunningham’s education includes a Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the United States Military Academy (2002) and a Masters of Science in Power Systems Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin (2011).

MAJ Cunningham is married to the former Jamie Lynn Young of Saginaw, Texas, with three children: Caleb (3yrs.), Elijah (2yrs.), and Anna Grace (9 mos.)
