West Point Truman Scholars
	Ahmad Nasir (Class of 2014, Company F-1, Anchorage, AK) Truman Scholarship Cadet Ahmad Nasir is an American Politics and Arabic double major and a member of the West Point football team. A native Urdu, Hindi, and Punjabi speaker, Ahmad has studied abroad in Morocco and Oman and hopes to use his education and military experience to help bridge the divide between U.S. and South Asian military officers in order to forge stronger bilateral relationships in the region.
	Erin Mauldin (Class of 2014, Company I-1, Albuquerque, NM) Truman Scholarship Cadet Erin Mauldin, an avid mountaineer, is a history and environmental science double major passionate about creating a sense of individual and communal responsibility for the impact of the military and society on the environment. Erin has developed and implemented sanitation training for West Point’s summer program and helped build a biogas-producing anaerobic digester in Uganda. She is the first American woman to complete French Commando School, intends to be an infantry officer and to continue working on sustainability.
	Hamid Nasir (Class of 2013, Company C-4, Anchorage, AK) Truman Scholarship Cadet Hamid Nasir is a comparative politics and Arabic double major. Hamid served as the Chief of Staff for the Student Conference on United States Affairs, an annual four-day public and foreign policy conference. Hamid speaks Urdu, Hindi, and Punjabi and aspires to be a South Asian Foreign Area Officer in the U.S. Army.
	Kelly MacDonald (Class of 2011, Company H-2, Carlisle, PA) Truman Scholarship Kelly is a Life Science major who plans to attend medical school before earning a master’s degree in Public Health. Last summer, she spent time at the U.S. Army Medical Research Unit in Kenya learning about infectious disease research.
	Marc Christopher Beaudoin (Class of 2011, Company A-1, Augusta, ME) Truman Scholarship Marc is an International History Major who will focus on African Studies at Yale University. Over the past two summers he has worked to promote women’s rights in Ghana, taught English in a Tanzanian primary school, done research for AFRICOM in Germany, and trained with Special Forces teams in Timbuktu, Mali. Marc has also taken part in cultural exchange trips
	Alexandra Rosenburg (Class of 2010, Company H-4, Honolulu, HI) Truman Scholarship, Rhodes Scholarship Alex is a sociology major from Honolulu, Hawaii. She is a planning to attend medical school and serve as an Army psychologist. Last summer, Alex volunteered at Tripler Army Medical Center working with veterans medical issues and this summer she is working in Gambia with the Crossroads Africa program.
	Christopher M. Tarney (Class of 2008, Company C-4, Union, NJ) Truman Scholarship Chris is a Life Science major hailing from Union, New Jersey. He is in company C-4 and currently serves as a squad leader. Last spring, Chris participated in a medical mission to Belize, where he conducted volunteer work for local medical treatment. This summer, he will organize clinics for HIV treatment as part of Crossroads Africa. He spends his spare time with the American Medical Student Association, the American Chemical Society, and numerous intramural sports competitions. A future U.S. Army doctor, Chris hopes to earn a Masters Degree in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He then plans to serve in the U.S Army Medical Corps as a research physician to help improve the deteriorating health conditions of Central America.
	Charles Eadie (Class of 2007, Company C-2, Santa Cruz, CA) Marshall & Truman Scholarship Charlie is an Economics major and serves as the Regimental Commander for 2nd Regiment. Last summer, he participated in an internship with the Congressional Budget Office where he analyzed the Army budget and reset program. He is a member of the Sport Parachute Team and enjoys skydiving, snowboarding, and surfing. A future Infantry Officer, Charlie will earn an MSc in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics from the London School of Economics.
	Todd Mainwaring (Class of 2007, Company D-2, Dothan, AL) Truman Scholarship Todd Mainwaring is a Civil Engineering major at the U.S. Military Academy, where he also lettered in varsity soccer and organizes community service projects in the Hudson Valley area as an officer in the Civil Engineering Club. He also participated in an inter-service exchange program, completing a semester in Annapolis at the U.S. Naval Academy this past fall. He enjoys running, meeting new people, and traveling
	Jessamyn Liu (Class of 2006, Company C-3, Richmond, VA) Truman Scholarship/Gates-Cambridge Scholarship Jessamyn Liu is a native of Richmond, Virginia, where she first acquired the passion for American political development she continues to pursue as an American politics and American history double major at the United States Military Academy. In addition to her academic and military duties at West Point, Jessamyn is the head manager for the Army Cross Country and Track teams. She has also founded a dinner discussion group to encourage informal interaction between cadets and faculty and organized civic education programs for local community schools. At Cambridge, Jessamyn will pursue a MPhil in Political Thought and Intellectual History. After graduation she will serve as a military intelligence officer and hopes to eventually return to West Point as a member of its senior faculty.
	Jonathan Bate (Class of 2006, Company D-3, Carthage, TX) Truman Scholarship Jonathan is majoring in economics and also enjoys studying Chinese. He has held various leadership positions at the Academy and has also been involved in outreach programs to local military veterans. Prior to attending West Point, Jonathan earned a bachelors degree in Accounting from Stephen F. Austin State University. Rather than entering the corporate world, however, he decided to embark on a military career. Jonathan plans to be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the infantry after graduation. Jonathan will use his Truman Scholarship to pursue a Masters degree in International Affairs at Columbia University.

	Steven A. Burroughs (Class of 2013, Company F-3, Dublin, OH) Fulbright Scholarship Steven is a Life Sciences and Psychology major from Dublin, Ohio. He is in Company F-3 and served as the company’s Sandhurst squad leader. Steven is involved in APAC, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Catholic Sunday School and ACS. A future infantry officer, Steven will earn a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Queensland, Australia.
	Paul N. Tindall (Class of 2013, Company A-3, Fallbrook, CA) Fulbright Scholarship At West Point, Nathan Tindall double-majored in Environmental Geography with Honors and Latin American Studies. He won the Fulbright Scholarship to study in Israel at the University of Haifa’s International School to pursue a M.A. in Political Science & National Security studies, where he will study environmental security in the northern state of Israel. Upon graduation, he will serve as a Military Intelligence officer. During his cadet years, Nathan was a National Finalist for the Truman Scholarship, completed Leader-1 at Fort Benning’s Western Hemisphere Institute for Security cooperation, and attended Galilee International Management Institute’s Middle Eastern Studies course.
	Khalil Tawil (Class of 2008, Company B-2, Gilbert, AZ) Fulbright Scholarship While earning his USMA degree in Economics, Khalil was able to participate in Operation Crossroads Africa and spend a semester abroad in Cairo. For graduate school, Khalil returned to Cairo to study Economic Growth and Development at the American University. He branched Infantry.
	Nate Bastian (Class of 2008, Company E-2, Danville, PA) Fulbright Scholarship, National Science Foundation Fellowship At West Point, Nate majored in Engineering Management with Honors. Upon graduation, he joined the Medical Service Corps branch to serve as a MEDEVAC pilot. While in the Netherlands as a Fulbright Scholar, he earned a M.Sc. degree in Econometrics and Operations Research at Maastricht University. As a NSF Fellow, Nate will pursue a Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research. During his cadet years, Nate interned at the Institute for Creative Technologies, studied abroad for a semester at Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico, and worked at the U.S. Embassy in Panama.
	Daniel Lennox (Class of 2007, Company E-2, El Paso, TX) Fulbright Student Grant Dan is a Comparative Politics and French major from El Paso, TX. He is in company E-2 and is on his company Sandhurst team. He spent a semester abroad at l’Ecole Polytechnique in Paris and spent the last summer working in South Africa. A future Infantry officer, Dan will begin his studies and research in Chad before pursuing a Masters in International Relations at the Université de Yaoundé II in Cameroon.
	Daniel A. Vallone (Class of 2007, Company E-4, Epping, NH) Fulbright Student Grant East-West Fellowship Dan is an East Asian Studies major from Epping, New Hampshire. He is in company E-4 and currently serves as Sandhurst squad leader. Dan has represented West Point at conferences in Taiwan, Japan, and also spent a month at the British Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. Dan is involved in Big Brothers, the Chinese club, and competes in the annual Sandhurst competition at West Point. Dan is a future Infantry Officer.
	Stephanie Hightower (Class of 2006, Company B-1, Rio Rancho, NM) Fulbright Student Grant Stephanie Hightower will attend the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom to earn a master’s degree in global health science. A Chemistry and Life Sciences major and competitive triathlete, she is the Cadet Corps’ First Captain, the highest position held by a student.
	Jacob Sheehan (Class of 2006, Company C-1, Eastford, CT) Fulbright Student Grant Jacob Sheehan will spend a year at the United Kingdom ’s University of Manchester to earn a master’s in developmental economics. Jacob is majoring in Economics and American Politics and is involved in Sandhurst, an annual, international military competition between service academies, as well as the Domestic Affairs Forum.
	David Cowan (Class of 2005, Company F-4, Wausau, WI) Fulbright Student Grant Dave is a Comparative Politics major with a Middle East focus. Last summer, Dave traveled throughout Vietnam and also interned at the American Embassy in N'Djamena, Chad. Throughout his years at the Academy, he has been an active participant in Model UN, Officers Christian Fellowship, Model Arab League, and Tuesday's Children. A future Infantry Officer, Dave will earn a MA in International Studies and Diplomacy from Al Akhawayn University in Morocco.
	Jeff Glick (Class of 2005, Company D-2, Buffalo, NY) Fulbright Student Grant Jeff is an Operations Research major who spent a semester at the United States Coast Guard Academy and also participated in an exchange program with the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, England. Jeff has been an active member of the academy's triathlon team, Model United Nations, and the Caring Cadets program. Last year, his submission for an International Interdisciplinary Modeling Contest was awarded 1st place and was selected for publication. He has also worked at the US Army International Technology Center in Germany and served as a US Student Delegate to the NATO Conference in Istanbul. A future Engineer Officer, Jeff will earn an MA in International and Development Economics at Australia National University.

Each year West Point cadets compete for and win many prestigious scholarships, most of which are listed below.

Olmsted Scholars Program

Major General George H. Olmsted, USAR, Retired, USMA Class of 1922, and his wife Carol, established The George and Carol Olmsted Foundation in 1956. They strongly believed the United States is one of the major forces in the world today. As a consequence, its military leaders come into contact with citizens and military leaders of many nations. Relationships between nations require a unique consideration of many factors including political, economic and military, among others. It is not enough to know one’s own strengths, weaknesses, and general characteristics. The solutions of difficulties that arise between nations require a knowledge and depth of understanding of the particular nations involved.

To this end, The George and Carol Olmsted Foundation established the Olmsted Scholar Program in 1959 in cooperation with, and support of, the Department of Defense and the Departments of the Army, Navy and Air Force. The first Scholars selected in that year for study overseas beginning in 1960.

Each year, the Olmsted Scholar Program offers educational grants for two years of graduate study in a foreign language and other educational experiences in a foreign country to competitively selected, career line officers from the four branches of the U.S. military. The Foundation has the goal of selecting the most highly qualified officers from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps annually, with the number of Scholars selected based on the Foundation's financial ability to support them and the available pool of qualified candidates. West Point has participated in the Olmsted Scholar Program since its inception in October 1959. To date, West Point has had 96 scholars.

American Rhodes Scholarships

The Rhodes Scholarships are the oldest and most celebrated international fellowship awards in the world. Each year 32 young Americans are selected as Rhodes Scholars, through a decentralized process representing the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Applicants from more than 300 American colleges and universities have been selected as Rhodes Scholars. In most years, even after a century of competition, a Rhodes Scholar is selected from an institution which has not formerly supplied a successful applicant.

Rhodes Scholars are chosen not only for their outstanding scholarly achievements, but for their character, commitment to others and to the common good, and for their potential for leadership in whatever domains their careers may lead. The Rhodes Trust, a British charity established to honor the will and bequest of Cecil J. Rhodes, provides full financial support for Rhodes Scholars to pursue a degree or degrees at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. The first American Rhodes Scholars entered Oxford in 1904. West Point began competing in 1923.

Marshall Scholarships

Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. Up to forty Scholars are selected each year to study at graduate level at an UK institution in any field of study.

As future leaders, with a lasting understanding of British society, Marshall Scholars strengthen the enduring relationship between the British and American peoples, their governments and their institutions. Marshall Scholars are talented, independent and wide-ranging, and their time as Scholars enhances their intellectual and personal growth. Their direct engagement with Britain through its best academic programmes contributes to their ultimate personal success. West Point began competing in 1982.

Asia Pacific Leadership Program Fellowship

The APLP seeks outstanding individuals from all walks of life (government, business, NGOs, health sciences, media, monastic orders, and education) to participate in an innovative leadership development program at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawai’i.

From August – December 2012, 35 Fellows from around the globe will join regional specialists and leadership educators in a dynamic learning community. From January – April 2013, Fellows have the option to participate in extended fieldwork in Southeast Asia, internships, self-designed projects and employment experience.

Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowship Award

The Graduate Fellowship Award is based on merit (not need) and consists of a cost-of-education allowance and a personal-support stipend.

The cost-of-education allowance is accepted by all of the tenable schools in lieu of all fees and tuition. Hertz Fellows therefore have no liability for any ordinary educational costs, regardless of their choice among tenable schools. West Point began competing in 1969.

The George J. Mitchell Scholarship

The Mitchell Scholars Program, named to honor former US Senator George Mitchell's pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to community and public service.

Up to twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Applicants are judged on three criteria: scholarship, leadership, and a sustained commitment to community and public service. The Mitchell Scholars Program provides tuition, accommodations, a living expenses stipend, and an international travel stipend. West Point began competing in 2002.

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship

The Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000 in funding to students pursuing graduate degrees in public service fields. Students must be college juniors at the time of selection. The Foundation also provides assistance with career counseling, internship placement, graduate school admissions, and professional development.

Scholars are invited to participate in a number of programs: Truman Scholar Leadership Week, The Summer Institute, and The Truman-Albright Fellows Program. West Point began competing in 1992, and has been named a Truman Honor Institution.

The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship

The Ambassadorial Scholarships program promotes international understanding and friendly relations among people of different parts of the world.

The scholarships sponsor undergraduate and graduate students, as well as qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the country where they study and give presentations about their own culture to Rotary clubs and other groups. Back home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that deepened their understanding of another culture.

Through their generous contributions, Rotarians worldwide show a continued faith that today’s scholars will be tomorrow's community and world leaders.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship

In October 2000 the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation established the Gates Cambridge Trust. The Trust is an independent charity and manages all aspects of the Gates Cambridge Scholarships program - selection of Scholars, Scholars in residence, alumni relations and all financial and administrative matters.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships are highly competitive full-cost scholarships awarded to outstanding applicants from outside the UK to pursue a full-time graduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. Gates Cambridge Scholarships are awarded on the following criteria:

intellectual ability
leadership capacity
a person's desire to use their knowledge to contribute to society throughout the world by providing service to their communities and applying their talents and knowledge to improve the lives of others
a good fit between the abilities and aspirations of the applicant and what the University of Cambridge can offer in its graduate program

The Fulbright U.S. Student Scholarship

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers fellowships for U.S. graduating college seniors, graduate students, young professionals and artists to study, conduct research or be an English teaching assistant abroad for one academic year.

In addition, Critical Language Enhancement Awards are available to grantees for study of critical need foreign languages before or concurrently with their grant period. More than 1,500 Americans receive grants to study, research or teach abroad with either full or partial support from the Fulbright Program.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers three kinds of grants: study/research, English Teaching Assistantships (ETAs) and travel-only grants.

The Winston Churchill Scholarship

The first Churchill Scholarships, three in number, were awarded in 1963 and funded one year of study. Shortly thereafter the Scholarships were available either for one-year programs or for the three-year doctorate at Cambridge. In the early 1980’s the Foundation decided to support only one-year programs in order to increase the number of Churchill Scholars.

In its early years the Foundation also made small travel grants to Churchill Fellows, distinguished senior faculty who would spend one year at the College. Eight of the Churchill Fellows won the Nobel Prize.

There have now been more than four hundred fifty Churchill Scholars. This site has a database that lists all Churchill Scholars, their undergraduate institutions, and their departments at the University of Cambridge.

The Winston Churchill Foundation awards at least fourteen Scholarships. The one-year awards lead to the Master of Philosophy (MPhil), the Certificate of Post-Graduate Study (CPGS in a only a few fields of study), the Master of Advanced Study in Mathematics (MASM, formerly known as CASM, the Certificate of Advanced Study in Mathematics).

Naval Postgraduate Fellowship

The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) offers an 18 month fully funded graduate program of study through the Graduate Research Fellowship in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Applicants apply through the USMA MSE Scholars Program, to conduct research and take courses towards Masters degrees in Mechanical, Aeronautical, or Astronautical Engineering.

A strong research background and top academic performance is essential to be competitive for this program that may expand across a wider variety of disciplines. The program of study starts
soon after graduation, usually in July, and is unique in its nature as an academic opportunity in
a joint environment.

St. Andrews Society of New York Scholarship

In recognition of the benefits of higher education, the Society provides significant funding for two Scottish graduate students to study in the United States and two Scottish-American students to study in Scotland.

Initiated by the Society at its 200th anniversary in 1956, the Saint Andrews’s Society Scholarship Program has consistently attracted the top students from the most competitive institutions of learning. The Society provides funding for two Scottish graduate students to study in the US and two Scottish-American students to study in Scotland. Each scholarship currently provides funds of $20,000 to $30,000 to be used initially against tuition, then board, transportation and other expenses.

The National GEM Consortium Scholarship

The National GEM Consortium is addressing the critical shortfall in the production of American engineering and scientific talent. The mission of The National GEM Consortium is to enhance the value of the nation's human capital by increasing the participation of underrepresented groups (African Americans, American Indians, and Hispanic Americans) at the master's and doctoral levels in engineering and science. Cadets compete for the MS Engineering Fellowship. Through the GEM Consortium corporations, universities, and U.S. government labs partner to provide GEM Fellows full tuition and fees as well as practical engineering summer experiences.

(Class of 2013, Company A-2, El Paso, TX)
St. Andrews Society Scholar

Antonia, a native of El Paso, Texas, majored in Electrical Engineering with Honors. She has participated in a variety of different activities at West Point, including being the President of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and Vice-President of Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society for Electrical and Computer Engineering. A future Signal Officer for the United States Army, Antonia plans on studying Electrical Engineering in pursuit of a Master’s Degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Sam Ellis

(Class of 2012, Company F-3, Farmington Hills, MI)

Sam is an applied statistics and operations research double major and a co-captain of the Judo team. Upon graduation Ellis will pursue graduate studies in Industrial Engineering at Northwestern University's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science.
