MAJ Thomas S. Herman was born in Bucyrus, Ohio and graduated from the University of Dayton, in 2006. His first assignment was as a Tank and then a Scout Platoon Leader in C and A Troops, 1st
Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Hood, Texas, leading both in combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom ’07-’09. He commanded A Troop, 1st
Cavalry, and HHC, 2nd
Cavalry Regiment, 4th
Brigade Combat Team, 1st
Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas during Operation New Dawn ’10-‘11 and Operation Enduring Freedom ’12-‘13
His other assignments include Squadron Planner, Rear Detachment Commander, and Observer Controller/Trainer.
Following company command he entered graduate school at the University of North Texas, earned an MA in Military History, before arriving at West Point to teach in the Department of History (2016-present).
