2.2. USMA at West Point Description
The United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point is located on the west bank of the Hudson River, 45 miles north of New York City. The United States Army has stationed soldiers and maintained structures at West Point since 1778. The USMA was established in 1802 and is the longest continuously occupied US Army installation.
The West Point Military Reservation covers an area in excess of 16,000 acres, including the Main Post and Training ranges. The 2,500-acre area known as the Main Post contains the majority of USMA’s academic, residential and support facilities and has been designated a NHL since 1960. The West Point ranges and training areas located south and west of the main post are mostly undeveloped but include several ordnance impact areas, two summer training camps, and a number of recreational lakes and reservoirs.

2.3. Key Environmental Risks
Activities at the USMA exist primarily to serve the needs of the Corps of Cadets. In that respect the USMA has many elements similar to those of a college campus, including classrooms, housing, laboratories, recreation, and athletic facilities. The USMA is unique in that, along with its primary function of education and training, it also incorporates functions of a military base and contains a 2,500-acre National Historic Landmark District (NHL). West Point operates its own reservoirs and drinking water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, and a natural gas fired power plant. It also operates several small arms, grenade, and artillery ranges. |
