New Faculty Guide
 
A Faculty Development Workshop is held annually for incoming faculty. Teaching at the U.S. Military Academy is a rewarding experience that requires new professors to understand the unique nature and mission of the Academy. The Faculty Development Workshop is conducted by experienced faculty over the course of six weeks before the start of the fall term.
 
Rotating Assistant Professors
Time Period​ Duties​
First Summer​ Complete Faculty Development Workshop (FDW).  Develop course lessons.​
First Academic Year (AY)​ Teach LW 403, Constitutional and Military Law.  Advise cadets enrolled in LW498/99, Honors Thesis.  Participate in cadet development (e.g., Officer in Charge "OIC" or Officer Representative "OR" of cadet activities, such as sports teams).  Perform additional duties as assigned.​
Second Summer​ Teach LW403 Summer Term Academic Program (STAP) as required.  Participate in Summer Leadership Seminar (SLS).  Assist in FDW.  Conduct Law of War training at Camp Buckner or perform research and writing.  Perform duties at Cadet Basic Training (CBT) or Cadet Field Training (CFT) as directed.​
Second AY​ Continue activities of 1st AY.  Assume Course Director duties as assigned.  Expand participation in cadet development.​
Third Summer​ Assist in FDW.​
Third AY​ Same as 2nd AY.​
 
USMA-Funded LLM Assistant Professors
Time Period​ Duties​
First Summer​ Complete FDW.  Develop course lessons.
First AY Serve as Course Director (LW475, Advanced Constitutional Law, LW481, International Law, LW488, Business Law, LW495, Jurisprudence and Legal Theory.  Teach LW403, Constitutional and Military Law.  Advise cadets enrolled in LW489, Honors Thesis.  Participate in cadet development.  Perform additional duties as assigned.
Second Summer Conduct research.  Prepare scholarly articles for publication.  Participate in SLS and FDW as required.  Perform duties at CBT or CFT as directed.
Second AY Continue activities of 1st AY.  Expand participation in cadet development.  Participate in Academy Governance (e.g., Dean's Academic Goal Team, Admissions Committee, Dean's Advisory Committee, Faculty Council).
Third Summer Conduct research.  Prepare scholarly articles for publication.  Goal: submit substantial, scholarly work to law review or equivalent legal journal for publication.  Perform duties at CBT or CFT as directed.
Third AY Continue activities of 2nd AY.  Expand participation in Academy Governance.​
 
Academy Professors
Time Period​ Duties​
First Summer​ Complete FDW.  Develop course lessons.​
First AY​ Teach LW403, Constitutional and Military Law.  Advise cadets enrolled in LW489, Honors Thesis.  Participate in Academy Governance.  Assist in developing/refining ALS program.  Participate in academic conferences.  Participate in cadet development.  Perform additional duties as assigned.​
Second Summer​ Co-direct the development and conduct of the FDW.  Conduct research.  Prepare scholarly articles for publication and/or presentation at academic conferences.  Participate in SLS as required.  Perform additional duties as assigned.​
Second AY​ Continue activities of 1st AY.  May serve as Program Director for American Legal Systems (ALS) Program.  Assume leading role in Academy Governance.  Assume leading role in mentoring new faculty.​
Third Summer​ Conduct research.  Prepare scholarly articles for publication.  Goal: submit substantial, scholarly work to law review or equivalent legal journal for publication.​
Third AY​ Continue activities of 2nd AY.  Prepare scholarly articles for publication and/or presentation at academic conferences.​
Fourth AY​ Continue activities of 3rd AY.  Attend Senior Service College if selected.​
Fifth AY​ Continue activities of 4th AY.  Attend Senior Service College if not accomplished in 4th AY.​
 
Title 10 Civilian Professors
Time Period​ Duties​
First Summer​ Complete FDW.  Develop course lessons.​
First AY​ Teach LW403, Constitutional and Military Law.  Advise cadets enrolled in LW489, Honors Thesis.  Assist in developing/refining ALS Program.  Participate in academic conferences.  Participate in cadet development.​

Second AY​ Continue activities of 1st AY.  Serve as Course Director as needed.  May serve as Program Director for ALS Program.  Participate in Academy Governance.  Prepare scholarly articles for publication and/or presentation at conferences.​
Third Summer​ Same as 2nd Summer.
