Lori Sheetz is working on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) research and education by bringing the study of networks and Network Science to K-16 students. Mrs. Sheetz has taught classes which introduce network principles to solve problem sets, developed activities which explore properties of networks such as minimizing the distance across a network for efficiency, and used visualization technology to help students view their own social network and learn about network topology. She has worked with middle and high school students from around the United States and presented initial findings at ICTP conference in Vancouver, BC. Currently she is working on an ARO funded project, ‘Network Science Education for the Next Generation’ and is mentoring two teams as part of an NSF project with NY Hall of Science, Boston University, and Binghamton University in which high school students are participating in yearlong network science research. Mrs. Sheetz received a B.S. in Geophysics and a M.A. in Education. Previously, she held positions working with K-12 students and has worked in several research centers including: the Hydrology lab of the NM Bureau of Mines, NM Bureau of Mines Mineral Museum, the Ocean Drilling Program, and the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center.
