Foreword
In 1993, the Director of the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) and the Dean of the Academic Board at the United States Military Academy (USMA) signed a Memorandum of Agreement establishing the Mathematical Sciences Center of Excellence (MSCE) in the Department of Mathematical Sciences.  The MSCE serves a multidimensional purpose with emphasis on uniting the unique capabilities of these organizations in a manner that benefits ARL, USMA faculty and cadets, and ultimately, the United States Army.  Since its inception, the number of participants in the various MSCE programs has continued to grow as knowledge of this cooperative agreement disseminates throughout ARL, USMA and the Army research community.
The ARL/USMA Technical Symposium (AUTS) provides a forum for USMA faculty, both military and civilian, to present and discuss various aspects of their collaborative research conducted over the past year.  The Proceedings this year document the ongoing research efforts of 15 USMA faculty members and over 40 cadets working in collaboration with more than 30 ARL scientists and engineers.  The range of topics addressed in the various papers convey the diversity of current research interests of the program participants, and are representative of the potential for future expansion of the ARL/USMA Faculty Research Program.
Copies of past Proceedings are available after the technical symposium through the MSCE.  The MSCE may be contacted by calling (845) 938-7685 (DSN 688)

Information
For the past 18 years, we have conducted a joint technical symposium between the Army Research Laboratory and the United States Military Academy. The primary purpose for the symposium is to provide a forum where West Point Cadets and Faculty present and discuss various aspects on ARL-related research they conducted over the past year to the ARL Director, ARL Directorate Heads and Scientists, and other West Point Faculty and visitors. It also creates an opportunity for West Point Faculty and ARL Scientists to discuss future collaborative research opportunities.

Sessions will primarily focus on ARL-related and other agency research conducted by USMA faculty and cadets. The sessions will also serve as a forum for faculty and cadets to see what research opportunities are available. Therefore, we ask that scientists from each ARL Directorate attend and present opportunities for collaborative research.

Abstracts:  Please submit abstracts to MSCE@usma.edu  via email NLT 15 October.  (Word format only)
Presentations:  15-20 minutes.  Please submit to MSCE@usma.edu NLT 15 November in order to make the Symposium Proceedings.
Audio Visual:  Laptops will be available in each session room.

The Mathematical Sciences Center of Excellence
The MSCE provides a focal point for research activities in the mathematical sciences that extends beyond both the Department of Mathematical Sciences and USMA, with the hope of developing lasting outreach affiliations.  These outreach activities involve all USMA departments.  In 2008, USMA faculty researchers from the departments of Mathematics, Physics, Civil and Mechanical Engineering, Behavioral Science and Leadership, Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, and Chemistry and Life Sciences conducted collaborative research with ARL through the MSCE.

The current MSCE staffing includes:
MAJ Tony Johnson, Director, Mathematical Sciences Center of Excellence
Dr. Patrice Benson, Deputy Director for Research and Outreach
Dr. Charles Randow,  Visiting Scientist, Army Research Laboratory
Ms. Nancy-Jo Lewis, Administrator and Conference Coordinator
Ms. Laura Hromadka, Conference Coordinator
