"History of Warfare" Gallery

The history of the military art is part of each cadet's required curriculum.  This gallery is closely coordinated with the academic courses on military history and traces warfare from the ancient world to the present.  The gallery highlights the technological changes in warfare and the strategic and tacitical changes brought on by those new technologies. Displays include dioramas of significant battles in hisotry, as well as Napoleon's sword and pistols, the safety plug removed from the Nagasaki atomic bomb, and trophies of war surrendered by a defeated Nazi Germany.

"Small Weapons" Gallery

​  Chinese Bronze Axe Shang Dynasty (1500-1028 B.C.)	Confederate Bowie Knife with Sheath ​	James Hunter's Rappahannock Forge, located near Fredericksburg, Virginia produced firearms for American focrces from late 1776 to 1780.  These large wall guns, of which four survive, defended fort walls, bridging the gap between muskets and artillery.  They are among the very rarest of American arms.​	Cutaways were often used as educational tools showing Cadets how particular firearms worked.  This is a Spencer Carbine Cutaway.​
The Pedersen device replaced the bolt on the M1903 Sprinfield and allowed the soldier to covert the gun into a semi-automatic rifle.  Wolrd War I ended before they were used in combat, but thousands were made for the planned 1919 Spring Offensive.  Almost all were destroyed as surplus after the war. ​	German MP-40 Submachine Gun ​	World War II Liberator Pistol ​	East German Makarov Pistol ​

Lucas Military Heritage Center

The Lucas Military Heritage Center is an exhibit space and smart classroom located at the West Point Museum.  It is named in honor of Medal of Honor recipient Lieutenant Colonel Andre C. Lucas, United States Military Academy, Class of 1954.  Dedicated by his classmates, their wives and many friends it serves to inspire the Corps of Cadets and future generations.

 "American Wars" Gallery

Our national freedom has been guaranteed by the sacrifices of our fighting men.  Here the visitor can see the armor of colonial militiamen and the muddy jungle fatigues of the Vietnam "grunt".  The British drum surrendered at Saratoga, George Washington's pistols, field glasses used by General G.K. Warren at Gettysburg and the last message sent by George A. Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn are displayed.  Also in this gallery is the Medal of Honor Wall, which commemorates those USMA graduates who have received our Nation's highest award.
