WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Office of the Medical Examiner, County of Orange, N.Y., listed the manner of death for Cadet Jacob D. Bower as accidental with the cause of death as exertional heat injury.

The autopsy report was released to the academy on Oct. 4, and an extensive investigation conducted by West Point over several months was completed on Nov. 4. Both concluded the circumstances surrounding Bower’s death was accidental.

“Our continued thoughts and prayers are with the Bower family,” said Commandant of Cadets Brig. Gen. Theodore Martin, U.S. Military Academy. “We are a close-knit family and this terrible loss has been felt throughout the academy.”

At the time of his loss, Bower, 18, of Fairmont, W. Va., was participating in the Land Navigation course, a requirement for all new cadets attending Cadet Basic Training.
