West Point fencers pick up wins against NCAA opponents at Veterans Day tourney

The West Point Men’s and Women’s Fencing Teams were invited to compete Nov. 12 in the Sacred Heart University Varsity Tournament in Fairfield, Conn., on Veterans Day. West Point was the only club team invited to an event such as this.

The Women’s Fencing Team picked up two wins against opponents from Yeshiva University (23-4) and City College of New York (14-13) while dropping victories to NCAA Division I Sacred Heart (4-23), Fairleigh Dickinson (10-17) and Tufts (11-16) along with NCAA Division III ranked teams such as Haverford (8-19) and Vassar College (13-14).

The Women’s Foil Squad led by Class of 2013 Cadet Leah Fynaut (11-10) had one of the best performances of the day, followed by Women’s Epee led by Class of 2014 Cadet Alexandria Rodgers (13-5) and Women’s Sabre with highest finish Class of 2014 Cadet Sara Downing (12-9). Athletes who joined the team and scored their first wins of the season include Class of 2016 Cadets Abby Jeffers, Samantha Verduzco and Jamie Whitaker.

The West Point Men’s Fencing Team obtained their first win of the season against Yeshiva University (18-9) and then had three hits against them from NCAA Division I host Sacred Heart (8-19), NCAA Division III teams Haverford (8-19) and Vassar College (9-18) and then lost a very close match against Stevens Tech (11-16).

The Men’s Epee Squad led by Class of 2015 Cadet Marvin Hargraves finished in first place with a record of 4-1 and Hargraves also achieved honors as the top epee fencer with a record of 13-1. In Men’s Sabre, Class of 2016 Cadet Blake Gordon went 11-4 and in Men’s Foil Class of 2013 Cadet Jeff Nielsen finished at 8-7.

Cadets who joined the team and scored their first victories for the season included Class of 2015 Cadet Craig Ferguson, Class of 2016 Cadet Andrew Wiggins, Class of 2014 Cadet Julius Kim and Class of 2015 Cadet Domenic Crowley.
