West Point/Fort Hamilton Exchange awarded for excellence

By Army and Air Force Exchange Service Public Affairs

WEST POINT, N.Y. (March 27, 2013) -- The West Point/Fort Hamilton Exchange has been awarded the Army & Air Force Exchange Service’ highest honor for operational excellence, the Director/CEO Cup.

The award, specific to leadership, expert customer service, innovation and business results, is awarded annually to one large, medium and small operation. The West Point/Fort Hamilton Exchange took home the trophy for the medium category at the organization’s worldwide Main Store Manager/General Manager conference in Dallas on March 18.

“We are ecstatic to receive this great honor,” said General Manager Michele Weisshaar. “Our team takes great pride in helping servicemembers thrive in difficult times. This award will serve as a reminder in the years to come of how the Exchange can and does make the lives of Soldiers, Airmen and their families better even in the face of adversity.”

The Exchange’s West Point/Fort Hamilton location played a critical role in supporting servicemembers and first responders before, during and after Superstorm Sandy. In October, associates at Brooklyn’s Fort Hamilton joined coworkers from their sister Exchange at West Point to serve more than 2,000 troops helping New York City recover from the deadly and destructive tropical cyclone. A mobile field exchange at Bennett Field supported an additional 1,600 troops in the wake of the storm.

Beyond Sandy, the West Point/Fort Hamilton Exchange engaged active-duty troops, military retirees, spouses, National Guard members and Reservists at various community events and meetings. Management forged personal bonds with installation leadership, and kept their shopping destination extraordinarily exciting with regular customer contests and prizes, ranging from gift cards to trips.

“This special recognition of the West Point and Fort Hamilton Exchanges is a clear reflection of the stalwart leadership and vision of Michele Weisshaar and her phenomenal team,” West Point Garrison Commander Col. Dane Rideout said. “Any patron that has visited our AAFES facilities immediately recognizes the professionalism, customer service and friendly atmosphere of her staff. During Super Storm Sandy and the myriad of weather related events, Michele's professionals have always gone above and beyond to extend hours, pre-position needed supplies and in some cases overnight billet her folks to be ready to support when the weather cleared. This award is extremely well deserved and on behalf of the West Point Community we want to pass on our congratulations and thanks for always being there.”
