|Army Invitational, Jericho, VT, 19-20JAN13||1/19/2013|
The West Point Nordic Ski Team hosted and competed in the Army Nordic Invitational Ski Meet at the Vermont National Guard’s Camp Ethan Allen Training Site in Jericho, Vermont on 19-20JAN13. The event kicked off Saturday at 1300 with a 10 km Classic-technique race on Saturday. West Point tied for second in team standings, with scoring performances by James Bassette, ’14, (3rd overall), Josh Bassette, ’16, (8th overall) and Andrew Beckmann, ’16, (9th overall).
Sunday’s competition included a 10 km Skate-technique race, which started moments after a large snow squall hit the area at 0900. Despite the challenging weather conditions, Army pulled together a third place team finish. James Bassette led the group again with a 9th place finished. Jordan Roth was the top finisher for the ladies as well.
To note, three cadets finished their first Nordic ski races this weekend. Congratulations to plebes Keith Basnett, Dylan Gahm, and Hanson Landon on the accomplishment!
|Cornell Invitational, Craftsbury, VT, 26-27JAN13||1/26/2013|
The West Point Nordic Ski Team competed in the Cornell Invitational Ski Meet held at the Craftsbury Nordic Center in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom 26-27 JAN13. About 40 men and 40 women representing teams from Clarkson University, Cornell University, Middlebury College, Ithaca College, and Hamilton College matched up against the Army Skiers. The race events were a staggered start 8-km Classic race on Saturday afternoon followed by a more grueling mass start 15-km skate/freestyle on Sunday morning. Yearling Emily Buck paced the Army Ladies in both races while Plebe racers Andrew Beckmann and Josh Bassette led Men in the classic and freestyle races, respectively.

Race was canceled due to a blizzard that moved through the area on Friday. As a result, the West Point chain of command made the prudent decision to cancel trip sections for the weekend.

Men’s Nordic Team Claims 2nd at Regional’s; Qualifies for Nationals
Bassette & Buck Take 3rd Overall in Individual Standings
The West Point Nordic Ski Team competed in their Regional competition at the Camp Ethan Allen Biathlon Range in Jericho, VT over the 23-24FEB13 weekend. The Regional competition was designed to replicate this year’s Nationals race template, with a 8.5 km Classic-technique race and 1.5 km Skate-technique sprint on Saturday and a longer, more grueling 15 km Skate-technique race on Sunday.
The Men took 2nd Place overall in the team standings due to the outstanding efforts of James Bassette (’14), team captain, and Plebes Josh Bassette, Jon Gilbertson, and Andrew Beckmann. James Bassette led the Black Nights on the Men’s side with an overall individual 3rd Place finish, after placing 6th in the 8.5 km Classic race, 4th in the 1.5 km Skate-sprint, and 4th in the 15 km Skate race. Josh Bassette, James’ younger brother, finished 5th overall and distinguished himself by taking 1st in the 1.5 km Skate-sprint. Jon Gilbertson and Andrew Beckmann finished 10th and 14th overall, respectively.
Emily Buck (’15) had an outstanding performance for the Women as well, also placing 3rd overall in the individual standings after placing 2nd, 5th, and 6th in the respective races previously mentioned. Jordan Roth (’15) and Aspen Doran (’16), who was participating in her first Nordic race, also put together strong performances, earning the Women a 3rd Place overall team finish.
