Mission
To educate and inspire cadets through physics and nuclear engineering course work, research, and support to the West Point Leader Development System so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country; and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the Nation as an officer in the United States Army.
 
Vision
The Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering is a teaching organization providing relevant, modern, forward-thinking education and research opportunities and is dedicated to the professional development of cadets, faculty, and staff.
·         Continuously prepare all faculty and staff for promotion to positions of increased responsibility
·         Teach, inspire, and mentor cadets in the disciplines of physics, nuclear engineering, and officership
·         Grow and care for the P&NE family so that it serves academy goals and secures the Department's future
 
Goals
  1. Teach a two-semester core physics program essential to accomplishing the overarching and math/science goals that;

    • is relevant, forward-thinking, and integrates modern equipment and methods into the classroom and laboratory

    • promotes scientific literacy as preparation for commissioned service

    • prepares logical and creative thinkers skilled in problem solving serves the essential needs of several academi disciplines

  2. Teach and resource undergraduate advanced physics and nuclear engineering programs that prepare cadets to succeed in graduate school

  3. Recruit diverse faculty committed to teaching excellence and inspiring cadets as role models

  4. Develop military faculty who are fully prepared to serve in positions of increased responsibility

  5. Prepare senior faculty for academic promotion to better serve cadet and faculty development

  6. Formalize assessment of the core, advanced physics, and research programs to ensure continuous improvement—close the loops

  7. Develop the nuclear engineering major into a nationally recognized program of excellence (ABET)

  8. Be a significant source of intellectual capital for the Army and the Nation

  9. Embrace service to our academic disciplines and the local community through focus on scientific outreach
