MAJ Shawn Fitzgerald is a 2nd year instructor in the Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. In 2013, he graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned a Master of Science degree in Nuclear Science and Engineering and a Master of Science degree in Political Science. After receiving his commission from West Point in May 2003, MAJ Fitzgerald completed Military Intelligence Officer Basic Course at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. He was then assigned to HHSC, 532nd MI BN, where he served as Company Executive Officer. MAJ Fitzgerald then served in Wiesbaden, Germany, as a Platoon Leader in B/501st MI BN, attached to 2BCT/1AD. MAJ Fitzgerald then deployed to Kuwait and Baghdad, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 05-07 as the Operations Platoon Leader and Executive Officer. Upon redeployment to Germany, MAJ Fitzgerald moved to Fort Knox, KY, to attend the Maneuver Captain’s Career Course. Following the MCCC, MAJ Fitzgerald attended Military Transition Team training at Fort Riley, KS, and deployed to Tikrit and Owja, Iraq, as part of OIF 08-10 as the advisor to the 4th Iraqi Army Division’s Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Battalion. After redeployment, MAJ Fitzgerald PCS’d to Fort Huachuca, AZ, where he commanded the 18th Military Police Detachment (Law and Order). MAJ Fitzgerald then attended MIT prior to arriving at the United States Military Academy.MAJ Fitzgerald’s awards and decorations include: the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (1OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (1OLC), the Army Achievement Medal (1OLC), the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Korea Defense Service Medal, the Army Parachutist Badge, and the Army Combat Action Badge.
