The staff and faculty intramural softball season wrapped up Tuesday as the Directorate of Intercollegiate Athletics held off a tenacious Mint squad in two games 4-2 and 8-5 in blustery conditions to claim the post softball championship for the second time in three years.
Game one of the post finals saw the Mint build a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning when DIA took advantage of a crack in the Mint defense while racking up four runs.
Greg Fleming’s two-run single to center put DIA up for good at 3-2.
In game two, DIA jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three frames before the Mint rallied for four runs over the next two innings.
Again Fleming sparked DIA with what turned out to be a three-run play. His triple scored two, then he scored on the overthrow to give his team an insurmountable lead.

DIA’s Scott Richardson blasted a two-run homerun over the Mint left fielder to seal the win in the top of the seventh making it 8-4.
Tommy Mrazek won both games for DIA as he and his squad completed a perfect 8-0 run through the playoffs.
North Division
DIA swept Math Aug. 1 by scores of 6-5 in nine innings and 6-0 to claim the
North Division title.
DIA overcame a two-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
Tommy Mrazek singled home Greg Londo to pull DIA within one at 5-4. With one away T.J. Mrazek grounded out plating Billy McCullough tying the game at 5.

Tommy Mrazek, with help from a stingy DIA defense, held Math at bay until the bottom of the ninth when with two outs T.J. Mrazek blasted a double over the heads of the Math outfield scoring Richardson with the winning run.

After four consecutive scoreless innings at the tail end of game 1 Tommy Mrazek strung together seven more in blanking Math on a three-hitter to win the series.
T.J. Mrazek’s two-run home run in the top of the first inning provided to be all DIA would need to advance to the Post championship.
Math advanced to the North final by edging the Department of Physical Education in a 3-2 eight-inning thriller before facing DIA in the North Final.
Math’s Jake LaPorte singled home pitcher Mike Jaye from first base for the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
South Division
The Mint advanced to the post finals by completing a two-game sweep in the South
Division Finals Tuesday over the Directorate of Information Management with an
11-0 win in game two.

The Mint won game one 13-6 while game two was suspended until Tuesday because of darkness with the Mint leading 4-0 after three innings.
The Mint jumped on DOIM pitcher George Woodbridge and the DOIM defense in game one for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning.
DOIM’s Joe Landry relieved and held the Mint to one run over the next four innings as DOIM pulled to within 8-5 going into the bottom of the sixth.
The Mint finally broke through for five runs to put the game out of reach.
The Mint and the Military Police split their semi-final series Aug. 1 as the MPs broke open a 5-5 game with Jerry Dunlap’s three-run homerun in the top of the fifth inning and held on keeping the tying run off base to win 8-6.

The Mint answered with a 7-6 win to even the series.
The Mint added two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 7-4 lead into the bottom half of the game. The MPs scored twice and had the bases loaded when Mint third baseman Doug Maloney speared a line drive to seal the win.
The Mint eliminated the MPs Monday 9-2 to advance to the South Division Final behind the pitching of Dean Smith, steady clutch hitting, and solid defense, all Mint trademarks.
Action July 31 saw the MPs sweep DCFA two games to none with 14-4 and 11-1 wins in first-round play. MP hurler Josh Brown earned the win in both games.
Other first round play saw the Mint beat the Directorate of Logistics 9-3 and 12-10.
Game two saw the Mint hold on to win in the bottom of the seventh inning despite DOL loading the bases with two outs.
DOIM held off MEDDAC 20-13 in game three of their semi-final series Monday to advance to the South Final versus the Mint.
DOIM pounded out five runs in the top of the fourth inning to overcome a 9-7 deficit.
