The Army’s Men’s Fencing Squad defeated three teams from the southern tier of the Middle Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Conference in Baltimore, Md., Saturday. In a sweep of the day’s opponents, Army defeated William and Mary 19-8, University of Virginia 16-10 and Virginia Tech 16-10. The epee team, ranked second in the conference, led by sophomore Isaac Erbele’s 8-1 individual bout record, defeated all three opposing epee squads. Contributing to the winning epee form was junior and epee blade captain Matt Keane and freshmen Felix Zayas and Wes Moerbe. Erbele improved his conference record to 27-4 with the day’s performance.

Army’s saber squad wounded the pride of its opponents. Saber, also ranked second in the conference, defeated all three opposing saber squads in some hard-fought and tense duels. Key to the saber win was the Army team captain senior Mike Lavalle, who went 6-0 in saber for the day. This improved his conference record to 23-3. Seniors George Cernat and Jeremy Kasper, sophomore J.D. Galindo, and freshman Gary Jones also added to the saber success.

Army’s foil team came out of the day’s competition at 2-1. Leading the foil squad of seniors Rob Falzone and Josh Knobel, with juniors George Elias and Zane Kang was Falzone, the blade captain, who compiled a winning 6-3 record on the day and improved his personal conference mark to 24-6.
