Jim Fox Senior co-captain Maurice Worthy (right) goes to battle against PJ Jones of Harvard. Worthy continues his quest for an unbeaten regular season. |
Army battled back from an early 9-0 deficit to crawl within two, but visiting Drexel took the next three matches to pick up all the points it would need en route to a 22-14 victory over the Black Knights at Arvin Gym Feb. 9.
Senior co-captain Maurice Worthy won a major decision over his opponent Dan Kennett to stay unbeaten on the year at 24-0. For Worthy, it was his ninth major decision of the year as he continues his quest to be the first wrestler at Army in more than 15 years to finish the regular season undefeated.
In the most exciting bout of the evening, Army freshman Kris Perrin scored an escape, takedown and a near fall in the second period to erase a 6-3 deficit and go on to a 10-8 come-from-behind victory over Drexels Joe Cristaldi.
Freshman Michael Quiroga, at 133, got Army to within 9-7 after four matches. Quiroga won a major decision over Drexels Bill Heverly 11-2. Heverly came into the bout 16-7 on the year, but Quiroga dominated him the entire time riding his opponent for 4 minutes 36 seconds of the match.
In the first match of the night, Army sophomore heavyweight Brendon Devlin attempted a takedown in the final seconds of a 1-1 bout, but wound up on the bottom yielding two points to his opponent Mike Carroll. That risk proved costly as Carroll was awarded the two points for a takedown and walked away a 3-1 winner.
The only other winner for Army was junior Graig Cooper who improved to 16-10 on the year with a 9-4 decision over Miller. Cooper also exacted revenge for a 13-8 loss to Miller at the Binghamton Duals.
Army is in action again Saturday afternoon when it travels to No. 8 Lehigh for an EIWA match at 3 p.m. The Black Knights close out the regular season portion of its schedule Feb. 24 when it hosts Navy in Christl Arena at 8 p.m.
