Senior Lucas Meyers looks up after completing a race. Meyers captured two wins against Bucknell in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events.

Army’s men’s swimming and diving teams received two wins from senior co-captain Lucas Meyers and junior Dan Downs as they opened the Patriot League season with a convincing 144-92 victory over rival Bucknell.

Meyers captured his two wins in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events. His time of 1:44.44 in the 200 was fast enough to break a year-old meet record that was held by former Black Knight John Martinko (USMA ’01).

Downs’ victories came in the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle where he used his long reach to jump out to a quick lead and never looked back, touching the wall eight seconds ahead of second place finisher Michael Harrigan of Bucknell.

In addition to the wins posted by veterans Meyers and Downs, the Army men also picked up points from freshmen Kevin Burke (1000 free), Steve Miller (50 free) and Sebastian Rodriguez (200 butterfly), who also had a hand in the Black Knights’ first-place finish in the 400 medley relay. Teaming with Rodriguez in the medley were sophomore Charlie Lewis, senior Mychajlo Eliaszewskyj and Meyers.

In 13 events, the Black Knights took the top spot in 10. Army’s lone sweep of the night came in the 200 fly as Rodriguez, freshman Dennis Zilinski and junior Ted Westfall took first through third, respectively.

For the second meet in a row, senior diver Matt Lofton dominated his competition on both the 1-and 3-meter boards. On the 1-meter, Lofton scored a 253.28 and on the 3-meter he scored a new meet record of 280.13. Lofton’s score on the three meter broke Tyler Standish’s (USMA ’01) mark of 275.47, which he scored at last season’s contest against the Bison.

The men’s next meet will take place Saturday at Patriot League rival Colgate. The meet will start 1 p.m.
