Win over Holy Cross puts Army in tourney

Freshman Jamie Lister and sophomore Jen Wynn each registered 17 kills, and senior setter Beth Bellinger collected 53 assists to spark Army to a 3-1 win over Holy Cross in the Patriot League season finale for both. The Black Knights’ victory clinched the No. 3 seed for the tournament to be hosted by newest member American tonight and Saturday.

Army captured the first game 30-21 but the Crusaders rebounded to tie the match 1-1 after taking the second game 30-23. The Black Knights put the win in the books with back-to-back 30-23 decisions en route to posting their third straight league win in closing out conference play 9-5, while improving to 13-10 overall following their fourth consecutive victory.

Last week, the Black Knights clinched one of the four playoff berths with a 3-0 blanking of Colgate, then outlasted Bucknell the next night (3-2) followed by Saturday’s decision over Holy Cross.

Army recorded a hitting percentage of .319 with Wynn setting the pace in posting a game-high 60 percent after committing only two errors in 25 attempts. Senior Stacey Gervelis, who recorded 14 kills, also made just two errors for a hitting percentage of 44 percent. Junior Leah Shubin chipped in with 11 kills and had a game-high 14 digs. The Black Knights had four players in double figures in kills in collecting 64, while the Crusaders had just two players in double figures in finishing with 49 for a hitting percentage of .200.

Regular-season leader American recorded a perfect 14-0 match record, as well as a perfect 42-0 game record in its first year in the league. Lehigh clinched the No. 2 spot followed by Army with Bucknell grabbing the final fourth spot this weekend.
