Freshman Jared Lostetter captured both disciplines as Army’s rifle team swept a triangular match in its first competition at the newly renovated Tronsrue Marksmanship Center Saturday afternoon. The Black Knights ran away with the meet in compiling a mark of 6082, outpointing TCU’s 5586 by 496 points. The Citadel rounded out the field with a 5182.

This is the third time in the last four outings that Lostetter earned medalist honors in smallbore. He topped the field with an 1158 in leading an Army sweep of the first five spots as the Black Knights (3-2) compiled a team-high 1518. Lostetter posted the highest marks as well in the prone position (394), standing event (376) as well as kneeling (388).

Lostetter’s 388 in air rifle equaled his season best for the third time this season, while earning him first-place honors for the first time in his collegiate career. Despite posting a season low 1518 in air rifle, the Black Knights claimed the top five individual spots and shared the sixth in outshooting both schools.

Junior Kim Pienkowski was six points behind Lostetter’s winning total in smallbore, placing second with an 1152. She also trailed him by two points in both standing (374) and kneeling (386) positions. Freshman Paul Charbonneau fired an 1131 and senior team captain Paul Kavanaugh followed with an 1123 in rounding out Army’s four-man contingent. Junior Jesus Tavares claimed the fifth spot with an 1116 before The Citadel’s Keith Kacmar snapped the Black Knights’ domination.

Charbonneau and Kavanaugh trailed Lostetter in air rifle as both fired 382s to share runner-up honors. Pienkowski was next with a 376 followed by freshman Ed Harrison’s 375, while Tavares’ 372 shared the sixth spot with TCU’s Stacy Phillips.

"I was a bit disappointed with the scores in our first competition in our new range," commented second-year coach Ron Wigger. "In spite of the win, we seem to be in a bit of a slump. But I am hoping that the competition we will be facing next weekend, the Walsh Invitational Saturday and the Buckeye Invitational Sunday, will get us back on the right track.

"On a positive side, Jared (Lostetter) has been consistent in every meet thus far, and Kim (Pienkowski), an All-American in air rifle last year, is returning to the form she displayed last year."
