By Cadet 2nd Class Cassandra V. Facciponti
Army Crew

In the last race of the fall season, the Army Crew Team captured medals in every race that was entered. The best performances of the day came from the Women’s Varsity A Championship Boat, the Men’s Novice Four and Army’s single sculler at the Virginia Regatta Nov. 3.

In his second year as men’s captain, four-year rower and Army’s first-ever single sculler, senior Tomme Sturm, captured a silver medal, with a time of 20:30. The Women’s Varsity Championship Race saw the ‘A’ boat place first and the ‘B’ boat a respectable 8th place. Four-year rowers, women’s captain senior Lisa Supancic and senior stroke Faith Copeland were part of the winning squad.

"It feels great to end four years of head racing with a win like this one," said Copeland, referring to the squad’s 23-second margin of victory. Completing the squad were seniors Mariann Hop and Jamey Brown, juniors Cassandra Facciponti, Jean Maldonado and Andrea Babcock and sophomores Frances Clark and Margaret Kenny.

The Men’s Novice Four captured a second-place finish only four-tenths of a second out of the victory, while the Men’s Lightweight Four rowed in the same race finishing a respectable 6th place among the heavyweights. The Men’s Novice Team wrapped up the day with two medals -- silver and bronze -- in the Men’s Novice Eight Race. The Lightweight Eight finished 5th among the heavyweights, two places out of a medal. The Men’s Varsity Team snagged 3rd place medals and a 4th place finish against competitive rowing schools like George Washington University and Virginia Tech. The Women’s Novice Squads saw their eights finishing 2nd and 3rd in the largest race of the day with 26 crews entered. The Women’s Varsity Four finished 12th out of 21 squads.
