Submitted by Army marathon

The Army marathon team’s brief season ended Oct. 29 as members participated in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. The runners dominated the field in their respective age groups and team competitions.

Junior Mark David led the way, running amidst the elite runners. He was able to maintain a pace of 5:58 per mile to run a 2:42.05 and place 27th overall, and first in the 20-24 age division. He was followed by senior Kevin Anderson who achieved his personal-best breaking the 3-hour barrier with a time of 2:59.37. The rest of the Army pack was quick to follow, crossing the finish line in an 8-minute spread. Sophomore Nathan Smith was first in the chase pack with a time of 3:00.31. He was followed by freshmen Tyler Berline (3:01.22), Thomas Kelley (3:01.51) and Sean Hollars (3:02.11). These runners earned the top four of 109 runners in the under 19 age division.

The women’s team showed similar success. Senior Dawn Gasparri and Gail Dwyer led the way with tying times of 3:21.30. Gasparri placed seventh out of 650 in the 20-24 year old female age group. The rest of the team ran an excellent race with the following qualifying for the Boston Marathon in April 2002: Seniors Matt Nethers, Francis Schafer, Kathryn Kennedy and Kelly Howard; junior Chris Kidder, sophomores Garrett Cathcart, Adam Armstrong and Matt Davis and freshman Brian Shiowaza.
