Freshman Jared Lostetter’s 1160 in smallbore and 384 in air rifle sparked Army’s rifle team’s 6122 composite and the lead in the race for the team title following the opening weekend of the Palmyra Invitational.
Army’s mark will be challenged this weekend when defending NCAA champion Alaska-Fairbanks and Navy will be among the field closing out the tournament.
Lostetter, who has been Army’s top shooter in both disciplines this season, broke into the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) December poll when he tied with five others for ninth place in air rifle after scoring a career-high 394 at the Buckeye Invitational in November.
The Black Knights, ranked sixth nationally as a team in that December 2001 poll, have been idle since late November. Second-year coach Ron Wigger was pleased with the strong showing of his team upon returning to intercollegiate competition.
Junior Kim Pienkowski trailed Lostetter in smallbore with an 1156, while freshman Paul Charbonneau registered a 383 in air.
Rifle competition at Tronsure Marksmanship Center here starts at 8 a.m.. To date, the Black Knights are 3-2 in dual meet competition.
