A weekly pet tip or other bit of information
from Capt. Felicia D. Langel, USMA Veterinarian 938-3817

Snow Concerns

Now that we have had a few good snowfalls, you may have noticed some unusual behavior from your pets. When dogs and cats walk through deep snow, some of it accumulates between their toes. This usually results in limping or reluctance to walk for short periods. As the snow melts between the toes, the pet’s gait returns to normal. In pets with long hair, snow may become entangled in the hair of the feet. Careful trimming of the hair between the toes is recommended in these breeds.

You should also be wary of the use of rock salt on the roads and sidewalks. If used in large amounts, this substance may burn the feet of

animals. Also, vomiting may result if the pet ingests the salt while licking its feet. If you notice your pet licking its feet excessively or has frequent vomiting, call the Vet Clinic.
