Junior Amy Saal led the Army women’s basketball team to a 73-51 victory over Lafayette in a Patriot League contest at Christl Arena here Saturday afternoon.
For the Black Knights, all 14 players saw time on the hardwood. Saal scored a game-high 16 points which also set a career mark for her. Completing her first double-double of the season and second of her career, Saal also led all rebounders with 13 boards – another personal best. Sophomore Katie Macfarlane joined Saal with the only other double-double on 15 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Christine Gassman added 13 points for Army and freshman Rejera Arnold netted a career-high 11 points.
Arnold had a perfect night from the floor making all four of her field goals including one from behind the arc. She also went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.
The Leopards led most of the first half. At 12:48, Lafayette pulled out to its largest lead of the day with seven points. In the final six minutes of the half, the game saw five lead changes and four ties. Heading into the locker room at the intermission, the two teams were tied at 26.
The Black Knights opened the second half dominating the game. The Leopards tied the score one last time at 29 with 19:30 remaining before Army rattled off 12 straight points pushing to a 41-29 advantage (14:11). In that span, Army used two points from Macfarlane, senior Halaevalu Helu, Gass-man, sophomore Haley Edwards, Saal and freshman Amanda Buchholz.
Lafayette (2-14, 0-4 PL) would come as close as 10 points (41-31) with 14:11 left in the game. Army, (7-10, 2-2 PL) pushed the gap to 28 points, its largest lead of the day 69-41, with 2:16 remaining.
Kim Costello led the Leopards in scoring with 12 points. Lindsay Meyers added 10 points and led the team pulling down five rebounds.
