Army’s men’s track and field team had no difficulties in handling the four-team field that included Lafayette, Monmouth, Delhi and SUNY-Cortland. The Black Knights reeled in 10 event victories, including several sweeps of the top-three spots, coasting to the unofficial team title at the West Point Open Saturday.
The Black Knights went a step further in the pole vault and the high jump where they snagged the top four places. Senior Spencer Baker led the onslaught in the vault, clearing 14’9" to earn the victory. Seniors Chris Bowen and Craig Klascius also cleared 14’9", while sophomore John Marion slipped to fourth overall with a clearance of 14’4".
In the high jump, it was junior Rob Manzo who paced the attack after a jump of 6’6.75". The trio of Reggie Nevels, sophomore Jeff Weaver and sophomore Adam Burke all cleared 6’4.75" as the Black Knights showcased their depth.
On the track, Army continued to flex its muscle. The Black Knights locked up six of the top eight spots in the 55-meter dash with freshman William White (6.3) and senior Omari Thompson (6.4) leading the way with a strong one-two finish.
Also earning event victories for Army were sophomore Trevor Hopper in the 500m (1:06.7), Jeff Weaver, long jump (22’7.25"), senior Zach Harrison, triple jump (45’3"), sophomore David Fraser, 5,000m (15:24.9), sophomore Seth Chappell, 3,000m (8:46.46) and junior John Dreher in the 1,000m 2:31.4. After winning the mile last week, Dreher cruised to first place in the one grand, keeping his mild unbeaten streak intact.
The Black Knights travel to State College, Pa., to take part in the Penn State National Open today and Saturday.
