Sophomore Liz Wannstedt won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:16.86 Saturday. She was one of two individual winners for Army in their loss to Columbia.

Junior Monique Robertson and sophomore Elizabeth Wannstedt were the lone individual winners for Army women’s swimming Saturday afternoon as the Black Knights dropped a 197-91 decision to the Columbia Lions at the Uris Swimming Center.

Robertson recorded her victory in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.76) and Wannstedt came through for the Black Knights with a win in the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.86). Robertson also had a good showing in the 200 back, placing second with a time of 2:13.77.

Sophomores Kristen Vahle and Garrett Shannon continued to build on their solid seasons as they both picked up a pair of top-three finishes. Vahle placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:32.78) and later finished third in the 200 IM (2:21.87).

Shannon showed off her versatile swimming style as she captured the second spot in both the 50-yard freestyle (5:20.07) and 200- butterfly (2:11.13). The Fort Meyers, Fla. native also swam the anchor leg for the Black Knights’ 400-yard freestyle relay team that took first-place in the closing race. Teaming with Shannon were freshmen Kristen Beyer and Shannon Kelley and junior Leah Sandmann.

Kelley also had a productive day for Army, as she took second in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:53.13.

The Lions were able to make a quick jump on the Black Knights as they took the top-two spots in 6 of the first 9 events. Leading Columbia were Lucy Eccelston, Suzanne Chaya and diver Teresa Herrman who all ended the meet with two wins each.

The Black Knights next meet is in Washington, D.C., Saturday where they’ll take on Patriot League newcomer, American University. The competition gets underway at noon.
