| Army senior softball pitcher Shauna Evans earned her third Patriot League pitcher of the Week honor for her efforts over the weekend. |
Army senior hurler Shauna Evans was tabbed Tuesday by the Patriot League as its softball "Pitcher of the Week" for the third time this season after tossing her fifth shutout in a 4-0 nightcap win over Colgate in a split with the Raiders Saturday.
Evans, who fired a three-hitter, took a perfect game into the fifth inning before issuing her first walk with two outs, then lost out on her no-hitter after giving up three straight hits to start off the seventh.
She preserved her fifth shutout of the season, all versus league opponents with back-to-back strikeouts after Army recorded the first out at home plate. Evans improved to 9-1 in the league with an 0.58 ERA over 60.1 innings, and her eight strikeouts are a game-high versus league opponents.
The Pennsylvania native tops the league in ERA, both in conference games and overall, and is the leader in strikeouts. Evans closed out regular-season play with an overall mark of 16-6 and 1.12 ERA. She has 139 strikeouts in 137.2 innings, averaging 7.07 per game. Her 16 wins is a personal best and five off the school and league mark of 21. Evans’ 57 career wins ranks second on the league charts and is two shy of the record, while her 518 career strikeouts is the second highest in league history.
Evans holds Army Division I career marks for wins (57), innings pitched (613), strikeouts (518) and appearances (108). On the season charts, she ranks second in ERA (1.12), winning percentage (.727) and appearances (33 set in 2001) and is third in wins (16).
Army has garnered eight league accolades over the past eight weeks, sweeping all three in the first poll and twice walked off with two of the three certificates.
Rain forced the postponement of Sunday’s doubleheader with Colgate after the two schools split Saturday with the Raiders riding Elena Isaac’s two-hit shutout to a 3-0 decision in the first game. The Black Knights closed out the regular season 27-14-1 (14-4 Patriot League) and second in the league standings.
Lehigh swept Bucknell over the weekend to earn its fourth straight regular-season title and the right to host the double-elimination tournament this weekend. Only the top four teams earn berths.
No. 2 seed Army (14-4) will take on No. 3 Colgate (12-6) in the opening game Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at Lehigh’s Kaufman Field. The top-seeded Mountain Hawks (17-3) will face fourth-seed Holy Cross (8-12) at 11 a.m. At 1 p.m. the losers from the first two games will meet with the winners squaring off at 3 p.m. The final game pits the loser of game four against the winner of game 3 at 5 p.m. On Sunday, the two remaining teams play in the championship game for the league title and automatic bid to the 2002 NCAA Tournament.
Army is 6-4 against the field, having split its two-game series with Colgate and sweeping its four-game series with Holy Cross, while taking just one of four in the series versus Lehigh.
The Black Knights reached the semifinals last year after capturing their third league title and first NCAA bid in 2000. Army won the league’s first title in 1991 and repeated the following year, while reaching the finals three of the first four years.
