Army’s lacrosse squad took one more step toward a Patriot League championship with a 16-9 victory over league rival Lafayette Tuesday night at a rain-soaked Rappolt Field in Easton, Pa. The Black Knights’ first win on the road in 2002 spoiled Leopards’ head coach Bill Lawson’s final game on the sideline after 37 years of coaching at Lafayette College.

Army (7-6/4-1) fell behind 1-0 nine minutes into the contest, but reeled off seven unanswered goals and held the host Leopards scoreless over the next 23 minutes in building an insurmountable 7-1 lead by the third quarter. Lafayette’s Tim Derosier ended the drought at 12:41 of the third. However, the Black Knights scored the next four goals of the game during a six-goal third that saw them open a 12-3 advantage.

The game was delayed 45 minutes in the third quarter due to lightning. However, the slick conditions and passing storm front didn’t slow down Army’s attack. Sophomore Jeff Bryan had three goals and two assists for his fifth hat trick of the season and fourth in Army’s last five games. Senior Tim Pearson added a goal and three assists to the offensive effort. Senior Jimmy Vlahakis (2G, 1A) and junior Mike Kamon (1G, 2A) each had three-point outings as well. Freshman attackman Chris Couch scored his first career goal with 9:55 left in the game.

Senior goalkeeper Dominik Nogic made 12 saves going the distance in the cage. Lafayette’s Kevin DeVito made 16 saves through the first 45 minutes of action. Mike Neary relieved him in the fourth quarter, making four saves the rest of the way.

Saturday, the Black Knights conclude the 2002 season with a trip to Lehigh where they can earn a share of the Patriot League’s regular season championship.
