Army freshman golfer Scott Manley was named the Patriot League’s "Golfer of the Year."

Freshman Scott Manley was named Patriot League "Player of the Year" by the league office Monday and five Army golfers were selected to the All-Patriot League Team following their stellar performances at the 2002 conference championship. Army’s head coach, Jimmy Ray Clevenger, was also named "Coach of the Year."

Manley won medallist honors on the third playoff hole of the league tournament April 20. He finished in a three-way tie after three rounds with junior teammate Kevin Lee and Navy’s Billy Hurley with a Patriot League Tournament record 209. Playing a championship format, all individual ties for first place are decided with a playoff following the final round of play. Manley shot a 69 in the first two rounds and concluded his performance with a 71 in the final round. Manley was also named to the 10-member All-Patriot League Team.

Joining Manley from Army on the All-Patriot League Team were Lee and seniors Pete Mangold, Ryan Hazelton and David Crawford.

Also honored from Army, Clevenger was named Patriot League "Coach of the Year" by his peers. Clevenger led the Black Knights to their seventh championship in the league’s 12-year history. The honor was the seventh for Clevenger.

"Scott (Manley) has been the glue the team was missing last year," said Clevenger. "We were good last year but we were not an NCAA-caliber team."

Tying with Manley for first place, Lee tied a Patriot League record shooting a 65 in the first round. This mark was the best at the two-day championship. Lee shot a 73 in the second round and a 71 in the final 18-holes to earn his first league honor.

Mangold earned his second All-Patriot League Team selection with a sixth place finish. Mangold shot a 54-hole six-over-par 216 (71-75-70). In 2000, Mangold was also named to the all-league team after a sixth place finish.

Hazelton capped off his senior year with his third all-conference nod. Hazelton took seventh place, his highest finish at the league championship, with a three-round 219 (66-77-76).

Rounding out the Army all-league contingent, David Crawford finished tied for ninth place. He shot a three-round 221 (74-75-72). Last year Crawford just missed out on the honor with a 12th place finish.

"I think five selections to the All-Patriot League Team is an example of how good our team is this year," said Clevenger.

Joining the Army five on the All-Patriot League team were Navy’s Brian Crum and Billy Hurley, American’s Wesley Cupp, Lehigh’s Bowen Osborn and Jesse Smith from Colgate.
