Sophomore Scott Manley lines up a putt during the Patriot League Championships last spring.

Scott Manley shot a tournament-best three-under-par 69 to win the Toski Invitational Monday, as the Army golf team took second place at the Hickory Country Club in Amherst, Mass.

Manley entered the day in a four-way tie for second place with a first-round 70. The sophomore won his first tournament of the year and second of his collegiate career with an impressive five-under-par 139. Manley also won the 2002 Patriot League Championship Apr. 21 and was crowned the conference’s "Player of the Year."

"Scott played two solid rounds of golf," said head coach Jimmy Ray Clevenger. "He is continuously improving. If he keeps playing the way he has the last few weeks, he will be one of the top players in District I."

Freshman D.J. Reeves shot his best-round of his short Black Knight career in the final 18-holes, carding a one-under-par 71. Combined with his first round 73, Reeves finished tied for eighth place. Drake Bailey, also a freshman, shot a second round 75 and tied for 17th place. Bailey finished with a 36-hole total of 148 strokes.

Sophomore Pete Phipps (77-78-155) and freshman Austin Luher (78-78-156) rounded out Army contingent tying for 46th and 54th places, respectively.

The Black Knights shot a 36-hole aggregate of 586 strokes, carding their highest finish of the season. Central Connecticut State took home the top team honors with 576 stokes. Hartford took third with 589 strokes, followed by Boston College in fourth (593) and Fordham in fifth (603).

"We had problems gathering a fourth score (Monday)," said Clevenger. "Overall, I think we played really well but we have a ways to go until we are a really good team. We had the individual winner in Scott (Manley), which shows the team is moving in the right direction."

The Black Knights will return to action Saturday and Sunday, at 8 a.m. when they host the Black Knight Fall Classic at the West Point Golf Course, here. Manley, a favorite to win, took second place behind USMA (’01) graduate Ryan Hazelton at this event last year. He shot a two-round total of 141.
