Patriots Weekend, foliage festival promise fun for all

Food, entertainment and fun for the whole family highlights the first Saturday of October with Patriots Weekend activities and the Town of Highland Falls 10th annual Fall Foliage Festival.

The Fall Foliage Festival, located on North Main Street, begins at 9 a.m. as the festival features a rock-climbing tower, food vendors, crafts, pony rides, train rides, Binky the Clown entertains, two Hudson Valley Dance Theatre performances, James O’Neill High School choir performance, Gym Kids performance, a historical society flea table and balloon art.

During the day there will be many contests for people to enjoy from the Best Chili contest, Best Apple Pie contest to the Great American "Hometown U.S.A." Chocolate Chip Cookie contest.

The festival will conclude at 4 p.m.

Patriots Weekend offers much throughout the day and concludes with a fireworks display at sunset.

The Brigade of the American Revolution camps at Buffalo Soldier Field is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Access for the public is through Thayer and Stony Lonesome Gates, with primary parking at Buffalo Soldier Field and F Lot behind the Holleder Center.

At 10 a.m., the Brigade of the American Revolution will have a troop formation at BSF complete with divisional drills and musket firing demonstrations. A cavalry demonstration follows at 11 a.m. Then at noon, the brigade members will parade from BSF through the Fall Foliage Festival in Highland Falls to the West Point Museum.

At 1 p.m., there will be a naval battle and artillery fire at South Dock. One ship, the Providence, will be moored at South Dock. Boarding is possible from 9 a.m. to noon and after the battle until 5 p.m. The other ship involved in the battle, the Bounty, will be moored at Bear Mountain.

Shuttle buses will be in operation from BSF to South Dock from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m., with handicapped parking at South Dock.

Musket firing will take place at BSF at 2 p.m., where the Old Guard is scheduled to perform. At 5 p.m., the Brigade of the American Revolution will parade from BSF through central area to Daly Field. At 5:45 p.m., West Point will perform retreat with five buglers, immediately following a Feu de Joie (Celebration of Fire) will take place, which is essentially the firing of muskets by the Brigade.

At 6 p.m., the West Point Hellcats, with bugles and drums, will perform a tattoo followed by the Brigade members who will also perform a tattoo of fifes and drums, followed by the Old Guard performing a tattoo of bugles and drums. The program is expected to last approximately an hour.

To end the day there will be fireworks at sunset at Trophy Point.

Entrance for all evening festivities will be through Washington Gate, with primary parking at Target Field and there will be no shuttle buses.

All Patriots Weekend Sunday events will take place at Bear Mountain and Fort Montgomery.
