Emmer receives Man of the Year award from USILA
STAMFORD, Conn. -- Army lacrosse coach Jack Emmer received the Howdy Myers "Man of the Year" award from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association at the All-America Banquet June 6 at the Stamford Marriott Hotel.
Emmer began the year by leading Team USA to the gold medal at the International Lacrosse Federation World Championships held in Perth, Australia, last summer. He added to that accomplishment during the 2003 collegiate season by becoming the NCAA all-time wins leader in Division I history with a 17-14 victory over Lehigh April 1 and leading Army to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1996.
"Myers was a mentor when I first entered the coaching profession," Emmer said. "To receive this award in his name is very meaningful. He is someone for whom I had a tremendous amount of respect."
Myers coached both lacrosse and football at Hofstra University on Long Island for more than 25 years. From 1950-75, he guided the Flying Dutchmen to a 214-139-4 record and four NCAA Tournament appearances. He was elected to the United States Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1971.
Emmer steered his charges to an 8-8 record and a Patriot League championship this past spring. The Black Knights reached the postseason for the sixth time in Emmer’s 20 years on their sideline, bowing to Johns Hopkins in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. It marked the eighth straight year that Army finished with a record of .500 or better.
The Mineola, N.Y., native became just the second lacrosse coach in NCAA history to reach 300 wins at the Division I level and the Black Knights captured their 10th league title in the 13-year history of the Patriot League. Emmer is 305-173 in 34 years of coaching.
"It was a special year for me and my family," Emmer said. "And getting to the NCAAs was a fine accomplishment for Army lacrosse."
Junior attackman Jeff Bryan also received his All-America certificate at the banquet. The first-time winner was an honorable mention selection by USILA.
