The Department of Defense released information Monday that the Army lost two more soldiers supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. Both were killed in action Saturday in Taza, Iraq.
U.S. Military Academy Class of 2001 graduate, 1st Lt. David R. Bernstein, 24, of Phoenixville, Pa., and Pfc. John D. Hart, 20, of Bedford, Mass., died as a result of enemy forces ambushing their patrol using rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire.
The soldiers were members of the 1st Battalion (Airborne), 508th Infantry Battalion, 173rd Brigade, from Camp Ederle, Italy.
The incident is under investigation.
Bernstein was a civil engineering major here and former member of the Army men’s swim team.
"David was a typical over-achieving cadet," said former Army swimming coach Ray Bosse. "He was a real smart kid who did everything the best that he could."
He is survived by his mother and father, Gail and Richard.
