Academy honored
The British Consulate General for New York presented the U.S. Military Academy with the Marshall Scholarship Center of Excellence Award Jan. 30 during a ceremony in the Thayer Award room. The award commemorates 50 years of Marshall Scholarships.    

Funeral held for 1997 grad killed in Iraq
Community members gathered Monday at the West Point Cemetery to pay their last respects to Capt. Matthew J. August. August, a 1997 graduate, was killed in a bombing Jan. 27 in Khaldiyah, Iraq.

The Jan. 21 announcement of the initial decision in favor of the Directorate of Information Management’s most efficient organization also signaled the beginning of hiring controls at West Point .  

Cub Scout Pack 23 races in annual Pinewood Derby
West Point Cub Scout Pack 23 held the annual Pinewood Derby in the U.S. Military Academy Band day room in the evenings of Jan. 26-31.    

Firefighters cool down during ice rescue
West Point firefighters are trained to protect community members from a variety of mishaps that can occur anywhere on post. That’s why a group of them could be seen on Lusk Reservoir last week, getting a refresher on ice rescues.

Men's basketball sinks Navy 52-50
Freshman Matt Bell scored 17 points and made three three-pointers during a key 20-2 run to lead Army past Navy, 52-50, for its first victory at Alumni Hall since Feb. 19, 1992 -- the year the facility opened. The Black Knights improved to 5-13, 2-4 in the Patriot League. The Midshipmen fell to 3-16, 0-6 in the Patriot League.  

Gymnastics 3rd at Open; Lee ties for 1st on rings
Junior Brian Lee shattered his career high on still rings in tying defending NCAA champion Kevin Tan for first-place honors in the individual finals at the 13th Annual West Point Gymnastics Open Saturday evening at Christl Arena. Senior Nate Whitten and freshman Mike Oliveira added third-place finishes on pommel horse and parallel bars, respectively.
