WEST POINT CADET EARNS MARSHALL SCHOLARSHIP -- Dec. 5, 2007

WEST POINT, N.Y. – A U.S. Military Academy cadet has been awarded the prestigious Marshall Scholarship.

Cadet Melvin J. Sanborn of Wilmot, N.H., will have the opportunity to further his education for two years at a university of his choice in the United Kingdom.

Sanborn plans to earn a Masters of International Studies and Diplomacy and a Masters of Arts in Chinese Studies from The School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.

The scholarship covers the cost of tuition, books, travel and living expenses while in England. This year marks the 54^th anniversary of the Marshall Scholarship, which is given by the British Parliament as a national gesture to the people of the United States for aid received after World War II under the Marshall Plan.

West Point cadets have earned 30 Marshall Scholarships since 1983, the academy’s first year competing for the awards.

Sanborn a senior will be commissioned as a second lieutenant and branch Military Intelligence in the U.S. Army upon graduation from West Point in May.
