Construction is one thing that is constant at West Point. While current projects affecting parking and traffic flow around post are moving towards completion, others are in the design stages and still considerably down the road.
* Arvin Cadet
Physical Development Center
"The contractor will be blasting for the next month to get ready for
foundation work," according to Department of Housing and Public Works
project manager Paul Merritt.
Merritt explained that the contractor will also switch the electrical power to a temporary system and then demolish the last building of Arvin, building "F," located next to Scott Barracks.
The expected completion date is June 2005.
*Kimsey Athletic Center
"Work is continuing on the building construction with the installation of
mechanical, plumbing, electrical systems and erection of the exterior pre-cast
panels," said Bob D’Jovin, DHPW project manager.
The new construction completion date for this project is April 16, 2003, he said.
"In conjunction with the building work, we are realigning the roadway in front of the Holleder Center and that work will be substantially complete by -- or around -- Sept. 2," D’Jovin explained. "We expect to use the realigned roadway in support of this upcoming football season. Overall, work is approximately 50 percent complete on the building."
*Library
The new library slated to fill the space beyond Doubleday Field’s outfield
fence and the existing location of the Cadet Library is at 15 percent design
with a target of 30 percent design due in late September 2002, according to
Merritt.
The expected completion date is June 2006.
*Michie Stadium
Lighting
D’Jovin said new stadium sports lightin
for Michie Stadium is in the works. Sometime later this fall, October at the earliest, all the new light poles will be in place and functional. Seven new light poles will form an array of lights above the new Hoffman Press Box with another six new standing poles located around the lower level of the Stadium.
According to D’Jovin, the new lights will have two levels -- one for practice quality and the other for television broadcast quality.
He added that the old light poles will be removed once the new ones are in place and are fully functional.
*Hoffman Press Box
D’Jovin said contractors are currently working to erect the structural steel
framework for the new press box.
"The concrete elevator shaft is completed and the street level mechanical room is nearly complete," he said.
The planned construction completion date is Feb. 14, 2003, D’Jovin added.
Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations Bob Beretta said a temporary facility would be used during the 2002 football season.
Overall, D’Jovin said work on the Hoffman Press Box is about 36 percent complete.
*North By-Pass Road
D’Jovin said work on placing the concrete curbs and road sub-base continues.
Realignment of the intersection of Delafield Road, Stony Lonesome and "A" Lot should begin this week, he said.
"The plan is to open up the new roadway for traffic in support of this up-coming football season on or around Sept. 2," D’Jovin explained.
"Road work will not be fully completed by Sept. 2, but will be available for daily vehicular traffic," he added.
The anticipated completion of construction is Sept. 18.
*Caufield Crew and
Sailing Center
Exterior grading and landscaping, interior finishes and the installation of
pavers on the observation deck of the crew and sailing center continues,
according to DHPW project manager Randy McMurtrie.
He said the work is 95 percent complete with a new completion date of Aug. 19.
*New Women’s Softball
field
The two-phase project is underway on North Athletic Field. According to DHPW
project manager Rob Mackson, phase one includes a complete and useable NCAA
women’s softball field and the required lighting with a temporary press box,
dugouts and bleachers.
He added that phase two includes a design for a grandstand area equipped with a concessionaire stand, a permanent press box, dugouts, locker rooms, restrooms, a training room and a field maintenance storage area.
Mackson explained that the phase portion of work is a possible gift project, if funding can be generated.
Currently the subterranean electric, water and drainage are being installed.
The estimated completion date is November 22, 2002, with the possibility of play for spring 2003.
"The critical item here," Mackson said, "is the sod. It needs time to root and germinate to ensure a professional softball field.
*New Brick Housing
Project
The entire project consists of the total "gut" rehabilitation and
renovation of the existing field grade officer’s quarters in the New Brick
Housing Area, Mackson said.
The three-phase project has grouped 51-quarter lots of which the first is scheduled to be completed in May 2003 with phase two and then three to follow.
Each phase involves the construction of a small addition to the quarters and upgrades of the utility systems.
Phase one currently encompasses the renovation of 51 sets of quarters along Winans Road.
