As District Superintendent of the consolidated New York and Virginia DoD Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools, it is with considerable pride that I welcome each of our military families to an exciting new school year with the West Point Schools.
The Department of Defense Education Activity provides education to eligible DoD military dependents from preschool through grade 12 with two distinct programs, the stateside schools and the DoD Dependents Schools for those outside the continental United States.
We are particularly proud of the excellent record of academic success that we enjoy here at West Point.
"DoDEA READS" is the DoDEA worldwide theme for the upcoming school year, and it is the goal of each of our schools to ensure that all students meet or exceed the challenging standards that have been identified in our 2001-2006 DoDEA Community Strategic Plan.
As administrators and teachers gather individual student data, it is our sincere hope that 100 percent of our parents will join us in our efforts to address individual student learning gaps with appropriate instructional interventions both at school and at home. Ensuring excellence for each of our students is a vital component of the School Improvement Accountability Reporting Process that has been established by DoDEA.
Standardized six-year curriculum development and assessment adoption cycles have been developed, and an overall alignment between curriculum and assessment has been established for our stateside schools as well as our overseas schools.
Monitoring procedures, funding for staff development and frames for completion of tasks are standardized throughout all DoD schools. School Improvement Teams within each of our schools, as well as at the district level, are used to provide advice and recommendations to the school principals. A collaborative process allows for input from all constituents (i.e. military, parents, educators and students).
We are working to ensure that within our New York and Virginia DDESS district, communities and families will work with our schools to promote the social, emotional and academic growth of all children.
We look forward to having you join us as we continue to provide opportunities for the successful achievement of every student.
