A short-staffed West Point Rangers pitching staff managed a split with the Westchester Mets Sunday at Doubleday Field here.

The Rangers lost the opener 3-1 to the 12-5 Mets despite a solid outing by Rangers righty hurler Eli Nieves who went the distance with a three-hitter. All three runs were unearned. He struck out four, walked five and hit two batters on the day.

The Rangers offense managed only five hits in the first game with Pat Magras going 1-for-2 and knocking in the lone RBI.

The Rangers split the doubleheader with a 3-1 win in the second game behind the pitching of Scott McPeck.

McPeck’s five-hit complete game effort included two strikeouts, five walks and an earned run.

Magras again provided the firepower going 2-for-2 with a couple of stolen bases and two runs scored.

Ranger Ken Ferrara was 1-for-2 with and RBI and a walk. Marty Martino was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Rangers visit the Croton Giants Sunday for a single game and will return to West Point for their regular season finale Aug. 18 with a doubleheader against the Rockland Tigers.
