The U.S. Military Academy at West Point (USMA) has installed a 17-terabyte Dell/EMC storage area network (SAN), helping improve network uptime on the academy's already high-tech campus.
All registration information, scheduling and course work at the academy is housed online, and each of its 4,100 cadets create and manage his or her own Web site. The SAN, which includes a Dell/EMC CX storage array, will help ensure that students and faculty can access important information by helping improve network performance and reliability.
"In this digital age, it's important that our cadets are exceptionally proficient with technology," said Col. Don Welch, associate dean of Information and Educational Technology at USMA. "As we continue to use technology to teach and manage information at the academy, we'll need a reliable method to store the data we generate. At 17 terabytes, this SAN gives us room to grow."
Technology is an important part of the U.S. Military Academy's curriculum. It was among the first educational institutions to wire virtually each living space and classroom with a computer network. In September 2003, the academy installed a wireless network across its campus and equipped its entire cadet class of 2007 with new Dell(tm) notebooks.
"By incorporating standards-based technology into all aspects of its operations and curriculum, the U.S. Military Academy continues to prepare its cadets to excel in their military careers, and beyond," Tom Buchsbaum, vice president, Dell Federal Systems said.
The academy's SAN project was completed in two phases, the second of which was purchased through the Army's Information Technology Enterprise Solutions (ITES) procurement contract.
