Freshman forward Katie Macfarlane scored 15 points and hit six during a 22-7 run late in the game as Army turned back Columbia 77-65 in a non-league womens basketball game at Levien Gymnasium Tuesday evening.
Macfarlane, ripping down 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double and third of her career, led a balanced scoring attack as four Army players joined her in double figures. Senior Dawn Halfaker finished with 14 points. Sophomore Molly McKinnon and junior Christina Canelli chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Black Knights are now 12-2 for just the second time in their history at the Division I level. Columbia fell to 1-9.
Rallying in both halves, Army used a 20-10 tear to overcome a seven-point deficit in the first half to head into the break in front 32-31. Army and Columbia battled to three ties and three lead changes in the first five minutes of the second half before the Lions pulled ahead 45-40 at 12:50.
Senior Therese Kelley started Armys decisive run with a basket inside. The Black Knights scored nine of the next ten points to open the 22-7 tear that put them ahead 62-52 with 3:48 left.
The Black Knights shot 54.5 percent from the field in the first half and 50 percent (23-46) for the game and went 30 of 41 from the line where they scored 23 of their 45 second half points. Columbia shot 39.7 percent (23-58) from the field and 58.1 percent from the line. At one point in the second half, the Lions went 2 of 11 from the stripe.
The Black Knights open Patriot League competition Saturday when they host Colgate. The Red Raiders were ranked third in the preseason polls and Army was sixth.
