New rules on firearm registration in Germany

WASHINGTON (MilitaryReport.com) -- U.S. Army Europe has announced a new registration policy for privately owned firearms in Germany.

Changes in German law that took place Jan. 1 mean that U.S. Forces personnel who possess and plan to use POFs for shooting or hunting must register them under the German weapon-registration system and obtain a German Weapons Possession Card.

According to a recent Stars and Stripes report, it can take months, if not years, to obtain the permit. There is also a disparity in how German officials interpret the laws.

Currently, U.S. troops are barred from bringing POFs with them into Germany. For more information on POFs go to www.per.hqusareur.army.mil/services/mwrd/pof.htm.
