Sophomore Travis Pendleton carved out the finishing touches on a memorable campaign May 31, debuting at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Baton Rouge, La. with an eighth-place finish in the first flight of the discus.

Pendleton produced a top throw of 173 feet, but was unable to qualify for the championship round held later that evening. The Army sophomore entered the competition with a throw that ranked 16th in the nation. Earlier in the year, Pendleton launched the discus 187 feet, 10 inches, smashing the academy’s top mark by over 10 feet.

"We (were) happy with Travis’ performance [May 31]," noted head coach Jerry Quiller. "This was a great learning experience. He did not throw his best, but he held his own against the best throwers in the country. We are confident that Travis has not seen his last piece of action at the NCAA Championships."

By qualifying for the NCAAs, Pendleton broke new ground at Army as the first athlete to ever qualify for the track and field championships in the discus.
