Fever stops Schwabe

It wasn’t supposed to happen this way for Army’s track All-American. Clay Schwabe arrived at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Baton Rouge, La. with a tremendous amount of confidence after destroying a talented field at the IC4A Championships. What Schwabe did not count on, was a 103-degree fever that forced the senior to consider scratching from the event. Showing the heart of a lion, Schwabe entered the race anyway, but fell short of duplicating his All-American effort from 2001.

Schwabe crossed the finish line in 3 minutes, 56.43 seconds, a solid time by most college standards. He finished last in the qualifying round out of the 20 individuals that received invitations to the NCAA meet.

Dan Wilson of Connecticut cruised to victory in the May 30 prelims with a clip of 3:40.27. U.S. Olympian Gabe Jennings proved to be the biggest disappointment, failing to qualify for the finals after getting out kicked in the final straightaway in the second section.
